Florida Foodies, Get Ready For A War Of The Delicious Wine

steak954Vintage or new? Storied designers vs. up-and-comers? The old/new debate will forever rage, so Stephen Starr’s Steak 954 is pitting traditional against emerging — wines that is — and it’s up to you to decide which stands the test of time. The Wine Wars Dinner series will pair five-course meals with two different wines — an Old World and a New. The first "war" has pinots go head-to-head. For $85 a ticket, you’ll get indulgent delicacies like hors d'oeuvres of foie gras with baby heirloom beets in a pomegranate-balsamic reduction, mini tuna tacos, and blue cheese-stuffed dates wrapped in bacon. (How can we fully express how behind the bacon wrapped dates trend we are?) The second is Anthony Bourdain-approved, since an undying fan of a good yolk will gladly dig into the yellowfin tuna with poached quail eggs and truffled chips. As you sip and decide, trendy foodie favorites will keep on coming: pork belly, short rib, tartare — and, of course, they’re all paired with vino. Chin chin!

Where: Steak 954, 401 North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale; 954-414-8333.
When: Thursday, May 24, 6 to 9 p.m. $85 per person.

What To Wear To SoFi's Newest (And Most Decadent) French Bistro

FashionPlates-LaGloutonnerie

Some call it SoFi, others say it's the muted response to the chaos on the northern half of Miami Beach, but no matter how it's named, the area south of Fifth certainly feels luxurious. Right on the tip of the city and with views to die for, now there is a reason besides lush scenery to venture, well, south of the Fifth Street border. Opening next Wednesday (which means this is a sneak peek!) La Gloutonnerie is not just a new French bistro, but it's cuisine from Français via Mexico City, of all places. In fact, the French flavors here have a very particular twist, combining the Gallic taste for a touch of Mediterranean with a cozy Mexican vibe. Think fine dining, but with a casual, breezy interior.

Fans of rich French delicacies will be thrilled: The menu includes items lobster risotto cinque terre, steak tartare, rich beef cheek stew, and dozens and dozens of wines (hence the "glutton" in the resto's title). In fact, fans of La Gloutonnerie are encouraged to take the experience home with an in-house market teeming with artisanal cheeses, charcuterie, foie gras, and caviar — meaning patrons can leave with their favorite decadent nibbles.

When it comes to your ensemble, Instead of going all Marie Antoinette, bring a little Left Bank to the point of South Beach. A breathable, bright blazer over a clean and summery white keeps things super smart and ultra chic. Show of your mid-May tan in some adorable and femme tap shorts, but make sure to keep the material luxe so it doesn't look like you're wearing an undergarment. And, while you might be dining in the more refined SoFi, you are still in South Beach: Add a punch of bright aqua to tell the world of your joie de vivre.

La Gloutonnerie, 81 Washington Avenue (at Commerce Street); 305-503-3811.

J. Crew Factory Cavalry Twill Blazer, $125, available at J. Crew, 726-728 Lincoln Road; 305-673-9806; Topshop Sleeveless Lace Insert Blouse, $64, available at Topshop.com; Michael Kors Astor Hoop Earrings, $75, available at Neiman Marcus; Elizabeth And James Katia Flared Silk-Chiffon Shorts, $295, available at Net-A-Porter.com; BCBG Max Azria Harlow Metal-Plate Clutch, $128, available at BCBG, 744 Lincoln Road; 305-673-9997.

SLS Hotel In South Beach Is Philippe Starck's Own "Sexy Hell"

HydeBeach_SLS-SouthBeach

For the launch of the much-anticipated SLS Hotel in South Beach, the news — from celeb-designers to top-notch chefs, just keeps rolling out. The lavish Beverly Hills import is not only in the hands of world-renowned architect Philippe Starck — who’s the brains behind the “dream world” theme — but it was recently announced that he has help from Lenny Kravitz. This isn't a first for the musician/actor; he had a hand in the Florida Room at The Delano (RIP). Kravitz will design the penthouse and one of the ten poolside cabanas, but the rest of the hotel is rendered with the imaginative and bizarre lens of Starck. There are rooms channeling the ghost of Madame de Pompadour, a bar with a giant bullhead, and a lobby with vintage camping trip images on the walls. The quirky interior is certain to be a major draw.

Weekend Must-Do: Miami's Sceniest Resto Starts Serving Up Brunch

juvia-main

Here at R29, we believe that brunch isn't just a meal, it's an all-out fête. There's nothing better than donning your best maxi dress, slipping on your stunna shades, and feasting on champagne all afternoon long. And, while we love our little mom-and-pop restos, sometimes the occasion calls for the city's best hotspot. Which is why we're clearing our calendars for this weekend's inaugural Sunday brunch at Juvia, the see-and-be-seen rooftop eatery that plays home to all of Miami's cool kids. The resto, previously known for their nightlife, is kicking off the daytime meal in style — we're talking an all-you-can-eat buffet of their upscale cuisine, and endless pours from the extensive cocktail menu. The weekly event will run you a pretty penny ($85), but the views alone will make it worth your while. Sunday Funday, indeed.

The French Do It Better: Free Wine With Miami's Best Burger

The-DB-Burger-by-EFrench American cooking is really the best of both worlds — on one hand, you get the delicious treats of foie gras and pâté, and on the other you have the option of an old-fashioned burger soaked with irresistible French flavors. In Miami, the restaurant doing French American cuisine best is db Bistro Moderne, thanks to the master himself. Chef Daniel Boulud has perfected the feel of a bistro with all the right American fixtures that we know and love (yes, even potpie is on the menu). Now, to celebrate summer and the classic American BBQ that goes with it, Chef Boulud is offering a complimentary glass of Bordeaux with any burger ordered during lunch or dinner. And this isn’t just any ordinary burger: The delectable decker is packed with red wine-braised short ribs and foie gras, tomato confit, and freshly grated horseradish sauce. Yeah, leave your PETA pals at home. You can order the burger solo for $32 or grab the prix-fixe menu option with an appetizer and dessert for just three bucks more. If there were a more appropriate time to say bon appétit, we’d be in France.

When: May 1 through July 30, lunch and dinner.
Where: db Bistro Moderne, 255 Biscayne Boulevard Way; 305-421-8800.

Weird Or Wonderful? A Real Deal Blind Date (No Seeing Allowed)!

dark_diningA blind date where you literally can't see — your partner, the decor, and especially the food you are consuming — might be the scariest (and most titillating) evening in Miami around. Apart from Fear Factor and cheesy drink commercials, eating or drinking something without the mindfulness of your eyes sounds ultimately sketchy. According to the forward-thinking, much-loved Chef Adrianne, eliminating the sense of sight only enhances the taste sensation of your meal. So when she hosts Dark Dining events at her restaurant, Chef Adrianne's Vineyard Restaurant & Wine Bar, guests are blindfolded and served their dinners sans yeux, creating a stimulating and delectable experience, especially with the flavorful skills of Chef Adrianne behind the menu.

Coining the term “Maximum Flavor," Chef Adrianne has had a multitude of success throughout her fairly short time as a chef in Miami, from working at the Mandarin Oriental to having her own TV segment and restaurant. Clearly, there is no one better to trust with your foodie reservations, and, for such an exotic experience, the $50 per person cost nets you a hearty six to eight courses of sensory delights. Next time you are set up on a blind date, take it — literally: Relax, go easy on the makeup (it won't be seen), and prepare for the ultimate taste test experience.

When: April 18, 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. $50 a person; reservations required.

Where: 11510 SW 147 Avenue; 305-408-8386

BYOB At SoundScape Cinema Series

Miami is full of open-air movie venues, but at this one you can actually hear the film AND see it properly. Take advantage of the mild spring evenings and pack a picnic for the SoundScape Cinema Series. This season features such classics as Vertigo, From Russia with Love, and Mrs. Doubtfire. All this comes gratis, thanks to our fair city’s parks department. Come an hour early to secure a good spot and enjoy a leisurely dinner (who can concentrate on food when Mrs. Doubtfire is on, anyway?) As the sun fades, the film begins and sounds of the city fall away. Then it’s just you, your sweetie, and the stars. And Robin Williams in a dress. Sigh.

loews_girlsweekend

Girlfriend time is the best time. This sentiment may sound cheesy, but it's true. So when a BFF-hang presents itself in a glamourous package, you shouldn't pass up the perfect opportunity to grab your best gals and escape for the weekend. Ocean Drive magazine and Loews Miami have so graciously set up the Annual Girlfriends Getaway Weekend on April 20 to 22. Leading the event is Bravo’s most fabulous style star (and recently authored) Brad Goreski, who will be hosting a book signing for his newest read Born to Be Brad: My Life and Style, So Far, and Ocean Drive’s Editor-in-Chief Suzy Buckley. Both fashion pros will be holding style and accessories sessions, so you can get the inside scoop on what Mr. Goreski is crushing on these days (squee!).

But oh, that is so not all. The rest of the serious set-up includes fitness classes from Lululemon, Flywheel Sports, and Miami fitness pro Tracie Wright Vlaun. And, what kind of girl time would it be without shopping and pedicures? The super-curated weekend has added in some pop-up boutiques hosted by frontrunners C&C California, Trina Turk, See Eyewear, Zeki Swimwear, Citrine by the Stones, Lululemon Athletica and more (keyword being more). Essie will be spotting mini mani-pedis, while Keratin Complex will be offering blowouts, because...hey, why not? Of course, there's a complimentary Bacardi happy hour, food, and an actual staycation of the highest calibre. Get exclusive dibs on this goodness, plus a three-day, two-night stay at Loews, all-in-one package for just $499. Sounds like a lot, but who can put a price on pal-time?
