Lenny Kravitz Has Designed Really Sexy Fur Furniture

MADEMOISELLE_KRAVITZ_group

Usually, a chair does not connotate rock and roll. However, a chair at Salone del Mobile (the Fashion Week of furniture) created by design powerhouse Philippe Starck in tandem with multi-talented powerhouse Lenny Kravitz, which also happens to be covered in exotic finishes like python and fur, can be pretty darn electric. Yesterday industry standard-bearer Kartell revealed its KARTELL GOES ROCK collection, which paired up Starck and Kravitz to create a set of wild, totally luxe seating which is based on Starck's iconic Mademoiselle chair.

Strangely, design is not new for the multitalented Kravitz, who — aside from being a musician, our favorite Hunger Games character Cinna, and dad to our girl Zoë — has whet his designer's whistle here in Miami. He conceived of the now-defunct but gorgeously executed Florida Room at the Hotel Delano and even built a super high-end and sought-after music studio at the Setai Hotel, all through his fledgling creative company, Kravitz Design. However, this is the first time you can actually buy something Lenny's produced—though the price has not been released.

While the fur-lined chairs might not exactly jive with Miami's heat, the python numbers and raffia-swathed sitters would be right at home in any Miami Beach casa. Here's a mini-prediction: Lenny Kravitz, next Art Basel star? Hey, the odds are ever in his favor.

Refinery Comes to Town: Our Editors Rage At Our Motorola Mobility-Sponsored Miami…

We warned you, Miami. Last Thursday, amid the manic artsiness of Art Basel, the Refinery29 crew rolled into town to celebrate our new local section dedicated to all that is good and stylish in the Magic City, and, just like we promised, we threw ourselves one hell of a housewarming party at Cafeina Wynwood Lounge with extra-special help from the people at Motorola (whose ELITE SLIVER headset — the gift of the evening — is so sleek and chic, people were sporting them while dancing and didn't look like lunatics!). Click on to see our fabulous editors mix with fashionable Miamians, cool kids in town for Art Basel, and a host of others. Gotta say, we love our new neighbors.

Indulge Your Penthouse-Living Fantasies At This Elle Decor-Curated Space

Elle Decor-Showhouse-Miami-post

Once upon a time princesses lived in castles, but nowadays, most of us just want a penthouse with a magical view. One enchanting room we wouldn’t mind crashing is Elle Decor's Showhouse, which opened its doors in Miami last week. The Showhouse is actually a show-penthouse that has been decked out by a superstar team of interior and landscape designers hand-picked by the magazine to create inspired spaces out of a 10,000-square-foot condo located on the 43rd-floor of the soon-to-open Paramount Bay building. So, yeah. Think Design Star on steroids.

Around the same time Lenny Kravitz was tapped to complete the condo building’s overall creative direction, the installation opened (during Art Basel as an official satellite of Design Miami/), but only to a select few. But starting today, we can all experience the fantasy abode. Tickets are $25, and the proceeds will, fittingly, benefit Design Architecture Senior High (DASH) since many of the designers involved (Juan Carlos Arcila, Vincenzo Avanzato, Wade Allyn Hallock, James Wall, and Deborah Wecselman) have a direct tie to South Florida.

You really have to see it to believe it: textured wallpaper, limited-edition furnishings, a covered terrace (the size of some of our apartments, easily), and a master bedroom fit for, well, a queen.

When: Thursday, December 8th - Sunday, December 11th, 11 a.m.- 6 p.m.; Thursday, December 15th - Sunday, December 18th, 11 a.m.- 6 p.m.
Where: Paramount Bay, 2020 N. Bayshore Drive.

Shoe (And Scene) Stalking At The Del Toro Art Basel Bash

Last week, while you were possibly hitting up one of these parties, or perhaps even snuck in here, the folks at Del Toro were kicking their heels (or flats) up in celebration of "Shoe Gallery 2011."

Offering up George’s Stone Crab treats and spiked watermelon bevvies courtesy of Kanon, the Miami-based shoe brand presented custom-designed soles from 18 artists from around the world. The challenge: each artist, including Pharrell Williams, Maximillian Wiedemann, Paul Aho, Fumero, Hacula, and many others, were given a blank-slate pair of Del Toro slippers and instructed to create an original design that would debut at the bash on Friday night. In addition to the varied works of wearable art, the Del Toro party also celebrated the launch of their limited-edition Intrecciato Woven Belts to perfectly complement your smoking slippers, still one of the hottest shoe trends around, obviously.

According to Del Toro, the "Shoe Gallery 2011" promotes both art and fashion during Art Basel, as well as providing us with plenty more pics to add to the Basel scrapbook. We landed the behind-the-scenes snaps from the shindig, in case you weren't able to make it. So, click through for all the deets on a night you'll wish you hadn't missed.

Housewarming Gets Hot: Amazing Style Moments From Our R29 Miami Launch Party

We’ve only just launched our Miami local section, and we feel at home already. This is in no small part to the many hip locals and industry darlings that took time out of their busy Art Basel schedules to stop in to the Cafeina Wynwood Lounge and give us a warm welcome to the neighborhood. DJ May Kwok spun tunes and the Svedka flowed as Refinery staff, friends from Saturdays NYC, local talents (including the founders of Del Toro), and the big bosses at GUESS (who sponsored the event) mingled, mixed, and mugged for our photobooth. After a very sensational evening, we're feeling fully adopted down here in Miami. Now, sit back and enjoy the moments of style that made this housewarming a night to remember.

Party Pictures! Diaries Of An Art Basel Insider

There are plenty of photos out there showing posed celebrities having a great time in Miami during Art Basel week. But we want to know what really happened when all that stepping and repeating was done. Oh, to be a fly on the wall at one of those swanky dinners. Sigh. Or better yet, to be The Webster’s John Lin, who actually attended the events. And snagged some pics for us. We asked him to chronicle the week's best parties and events, from his oh-so-insider perspective. And guess what. He did it! So, click through to read about the cat fights, love fests, and everything in between, that went down last week.

Night And Day Rager: Crazy Party Pix From Our Art Basel Event!

If you haven't already figured it out, we really know how to party here at Refinery29. So add Miami, day drinking, and a late night rager into the equation and you've got a potent recipe for a real good time. Yesterday started out with day two of our Double Vision exhibition at the Hotel Gansevoort, and we got into the Miami spirit by mixing some winter gear with our fave summer togs, peeped art poolside (!), and, oh yea, had a shot our two of the Double Vision sips: Fenom Absinthe mixed with Starbucks VIA makes for double trouble. Once the sun came down, we headed downstairs (how convenient) for our Art Basel party thrown with our good friends from the Jane Hotel at hotspot Coco De Ville. DJs Tim Barber, Florencia Galarza, Jesse Hudnutt, and Haley Wollens helped the party crew dancing on tables big-time: We spotted Nate Lowman, Jaime Johnson, Art + Culture's own Chessy Wilson, KAWS, and Aurel Schmidt getting their boogie on. And of course we helped:—a huge clutch of R29-ers most definitely put the team in team building! Click through for some pics—we think you'll understand why we had to take three Advil this morning.

Bruce Weber's BFFs Came Out For One Unforgettable Bash

Art Basel has been a bit like Fashion Week—too much to do, too much to see; pretty much FOMO central. But one happ we just couldn't pass up was Bruce Weber's bash last night, co-hosted by André Balazs (we've officially given him the busiest host of the week award) to big ups the 10th anniversary of the photog's All-American Book Series. Quite the impressive collection of Weber's bestest friends came out to boogie Bruce-style—we're talking Nan Bush, Chiara Clemente, Calvin Klein, Lorenzo Martone, Peter Som, and Ryan McGuinness among them. Oh, and, Bruce being Bruce, there were a bazillion hotties that we can't quite forget. Held bayside at the Standard Spa, partygoers got to peep past imageries of Weber's work, and, in a shock to alcohol-soaked systems, a speed boat came through and soaked the crowd and the impromptu marching band. Wet and wild!

All-Day Art Party: Come By Double Vision At The Gansevoort

double-vision-art-basel-3

When a party starts at 11 a.m., you know it's going to be a doozy. Day drinking is the name of the game in Miami, and we're certainly letting you get in on the time honored tradition. For Art Basel, we've collaborated with Art + Culture Editions and Starbucks for a sick art exhibition on the stunning rooftop of the Gansevoort South Beach. We've put shipping crates on the deck (replete with shipping labels!), and they're adorned with artist prints from our fave creatives like Poppy De Villeneuve, Amelia Bauer, Kava Gorna, and Brent Steen. So if you're down in Miami, why the f aren't you here? Not only art is on tap—we've got free Double Visions sips with Starbucks VIA blended Fenom Modern Absithe for some major seeing double action. We'll be poolside all day, so stop by and get your coffee and art buzz on: the DJ is blasting old school Biggie, the sun is shining, and the people are pretty. See you soon!

11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Gansevoort Miami Beach, Rooftop, East End, 2377 Collins Avenue.

Miami's Hottest New Shop Opens Just In Time For Art Basel

standard-oh-wow

Let's face it, we've pretty much been there, done that with shopping strips, malls and stalls. And now that we're down in Miami, we want to do things a lil' differently. Well, Santa's paying attention: Just in time to alleviate our holiday shopping malaise, The Standard Hotel and Miami Design District's OHWOW gallery have partnered up to create STND/OHWOW, a retail space that will inject some much-needed interest back into our favorite activity. Of course this little gem opened yesterday in tandem with Art Basel Miami, so it's no wonder that the boutique features custom pieces designed by hot-shot artists like Terrence Koh and Ari Marcopolous, as well as exclusively published art books and one-of-a-kind tchtokes from the gallery's regs—think KAWS, Tim Barber, and Andrew Kuo. The cleverly curated merch will take pride of place in the store's elaborate set up—glossy whites and subtle shocks of turquoise—undertaken by none other than virtuoso architect Rafael de Cárdenas. Even if you don't want to deplete your bank account, you can still stop by for some fun—the space will play host to book signings, exhibitions, and installations well into 2011. Oh wow.

The Standard, Miami Beach, 40 Island Avenue; Miami Beach; 305-673-1717.

Party Pix: The Coolest Boat In The World

Art Basel Miami madness officially began last night, and holy shit did it start with a bang. André Balazs threw a massive rager with Dom Pérignon to celebrate the first sea launch of design icon Marc Newson's The Aquariva, quite possibly the coolest boat in the known universe. Crafted in partnership with Officina Italiana Design, the vessel launched in September with a limited edition of 22, resulting in a massive orgasm by design junkies everywhere. The speed boat is fit for Avatar, with unique materials, state-of-the-art technology, and a slick, sleek look that would really make for a stellar standout piece in, say, our living room. Of course this seafaring splurge comes at a staggery price—$1.28 million each, available only through Gagosian Gallery (though if you have that cash, we guarantee it will be worth a mint in five years of so). We're not surprised that the clutch of NYC peeps who gathered to witness this gorgeous craft were equally as glam—Jean Pigozzi, Stefano Tonchi, China Chow, Sante D'Orazio, Andre Saraiva, and Rafael de Cardenas checked out the Aquariva very, very hungrily. Of course, Balazs stole the show; he made his arrival to the fete by showing up on the boat before it was docked at the Standard Miami for the evening. Brings to mind a Barenaked Ladies song, don't it?
