All You Need To Know About Waterproof Mascara

We’ve all been there. You head to the ladies room after running around in the 90-degree heat and discover, to your horror, you now resemble the face of a late night LIV adventure. Except it’s only 3 p.m. Or worse: Your BFF is finally getting hitched to the man of her dreams and you are a big ole softie who quickly gets raccoon eyes as she walks down the aisle. How to solve this ongoing debacle? Waterproof mascara, of course!

While that seems like a no-brainer, the intricacies of the water-insoluble mascara world are actually quite complex. For instance, waterproof mascara is thicker than the regular stuff, wreaking more havoc on your lashes than water-y eyes do on your ego. So in the middle of wedding, allergy, and swim season we turned to the pros at Bal Harbor's Gee Beauty. Natalie, the expert makeup and skin care partner at one of our favorite shops, gave us the lowdown on waterproof mascara and healthy lashes, all from a convenient Miami perspective. Boat day? Pool party? Gym sesh? Psh, no problem. Get ready to look all sorts of smudge-free and beautiful.

These Editor-Approved Bright Lipsticks Get Even Better In The Sun

Bright pouts are major, we know. Creamy corals, punchy pinks, and show-stopping reds are all over, and lipstick, like a fierce mani, is becoming a statement detail. Yet, the runways (like the great Gucci look featured here) and international street style phenoms have forgotten that one little detail us So Flo folk deal with daily: This sun is hot. Not only is it hot, but wearing a matte, opaque color can begin to look a little melty, and a too-solid tone might more Ronald McDonald than rad. So what's a Miami girl to do?

If daring neons and Crayola-hues aren't your thing, each of these lippies comes with a little sheer shine, meaning you can swipe on a quick layer, or apply several times to turn up the volume. Remember, choose the color that you think works best with your skin tone, and for more dramatic daytime looks, pair your lip choice with a matching lip liner. If cool casual is more your thing, you'll want to stick with some slick glosses. With a hint of shine and some serious pigment, click through to see 10 shades that'll pop perfectly, whether the sun is up, down, or somewhere in between.

5 Coral Lips Shades And How To Wear Them Now!

The season's must-try lip shade is beachy and hot — sound familiar Miami? While we're guilty of constantly reaching for our signature red, we're switching gears for spring and embracing a coral kisser — inspired by the pretty puckers we were obsessed with after scanning J.Crew's latest catalog. But, before you get all pouty and doubt-y, we've enlisted the help of Make Up For Ever pro educator David Hernandez to help you pick your perfect coral match. While the hue may look vivid, it's a surprisingly versatile shade: "Coral is actually a neutral color," Hernandez says, "meaning it can be both warm and cool so it works for everyone."

When it comes to selecting a statement-making pop of color for your lips, the trick to picking the right one is not based on your skin's actual shade, Hernandez says, but rather your undertones. "If your skin has gold or yellow undertones, a peachier or orange coral will be most flattering. If you have pink undertones, choose a pink or red-based coral."

With our pro tips in mind, we picked five new coral lip colors to get you started with spring's freshest beauty trend. From shiny and sheer balm to high-impact lipstick, check out the prettiest peachy-hued lip products to add to your beauty bag.

Score Semi-Precious Peepers With This Jewel Eyeliner How-To

So, maybe you’re a little black dress kind of girl. Or perhaps, a hair-pulled-back-in-a-ponytail gal. Simple and classic. We love it. But sometimes it's nice to think a bit outside of the basic box, especially when it comes to makeup. Lucky for all of us, New Year’s Eve is right around the corner, which is the perfect opportunity to give jewel-toned eyeliner a try — it's festive, eye-catching, and the perfect touch to get you noticed on NYE. We asked one of our fave makeup artists, Anais Guerra, to teach us the ins and outs of this luminous liner look. Click through for the five-step how-to, plus a few insider secrets that'll guarantee you don't screw it up. Not that you would, of course.

Pucker Up With This DIY Glitter-Lip Trick

slide From shiny pumps to shimmery tops, there’s no doubt sparkle is having a moment this season. But if the idea of sequin-covered shorts gives you the willies, try adding subtle shine to your look with glitter makeup. We know, we know. There's the potential for disaster here. So, to help you master the look (and to make sure you don't end up looking like a lost Mardi Gras reveler), we called on Fred Vellon (of beauty boutique A-ttak) to help complete our holiday vision. The former senior artist for MAC welcomed us into his newly opened Miami Beach studio and shared an easy lipstick technique, complete with a step-by-step explanation. Read on to learn how to recreate Vellon’s glittery look — which is sure to add some glimmer to your smile.

Step 1: This perfectly balanced, bold lip is all about symmetry. With a red lip liner, start by making an imaginary line from each nostril to the lip. Where the lines end, draw two dots on both the upper and bottom lips.

Step 2: Connect the two top dots creating an M-shape. Then connect the bottom dots by making a straight line. Continue by outlining the remainder of the lip.

Step 3: With the red lip liner, pencil in the entire lip. If your lipstick falls off, your lip liner will save your lips from looking bare.

Step 4: Next, grab a big brush and with one stroke add your choice of red lipstick (Vellon used Chanel’s Rouge Allure).

Step 5: Dip a small brush in red glitter (this can come from the craft store) and dab onto lips, starting at the center and working your way to the outer part of the lips.

Step 6: Clean any excess red off with a slanted eye shadow brush covered in moisturizer and concealer.

Voilá! An easy dash of drama that sparkles in the light’s reflection.

Mara Hoffman Presents Face Paint That's Festival-Approved

music-festival-makeup-facepaint

Outdoor music festivals are the one place where you can really let your freak flag fly—and when it comes to makeup, anything really goes. We've always opted for some sort of face paint, but it's sometimes hard to figure out a style that won't make you look like a juggalo. Last Saturday at Fashion Week Swim in Miami, Mara Hoffman presented a chic option: she was inspired by Amazonian warriors for her swim line. Lottie, from Make Up Forever Alliance, served as the key make up artist for Hoffman's show and used a lip brush to draw small white dots at the top of the cheek bones starting from the outer corner of the eyes and over the lower bridge of the nose, following the natural shape of the eyes.

Above products: Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream in #4 Snow, $22.00, available at Sephora; Sephora Collection Retractable Lip Brush, $10.00, available at Sephora.

Makeup Trend: Gold Accents Bring Out The Glamazon

Maybe it's the dark and stormy skies outside or the fact that our skin could use a little Miami magic, but something about a golden shimmer seems awfully appealing these days. While we drew lots of metallic inspiration from the runways of McQueen and Balmain, we're thinking a solid-gold lip could almost make us feel as glamorous as any liquid gold mini dress. But if that's even a little too rich for your blood, we recommend some subtler shimmers, from liquid eye-liner to a potent eye cream loaded with purifying Nano gold. Basically, these are some precious metals we can all get in on.
