You Totally Got This: 4 Easy Braids For Rookies

While some girls learn to braid hair by practicing on their dolls, others learn by practicing on their, um, horses. Like Audra Billingsley, who loosened up her fingers by working with ponies. That’s right; Before becoming a sought-after Miami hair pro, Billingsley was known in her hometown of Walla Walla, Washington as the best mane artist around. True story.

And with a resume like that, who better to talk to about perfecting the braid than Billingsley? We caught up with the Sean Donaldson Salon stylist and had her teach us how to master 4 simple braid styles. Her techniques are so easy that even a rookie can duplicate the twists. So make like Billingsley and pony up, and click through our step-by-step tutorial. Then, get ready to give Miss Conrad a run for her money.

Keep Your Hair Healthier For A LOT Longer With This Awesome Shampoo

aveda-invati-post We like to think that our bodies can tolerate any amount of abuse. And we test those limits by doing things like eating wild amounts of pizza or baking in the sun for hours at a time. Normally, the first point any critical type will make is that these things are terrible for your skin, and they're of course right. But have you given any thought to how your unhealthy habits might be affecting the future of your hair? Probably not — we sure didn’t!

Now that you're thinking about it, though, possibly you're interested in a solution? We got you. Introducing Invati, a new product line from Aveda that promises to reduce hair loss by 33% and claims to help you hold on to the voluminous nature of youthful hair.

Finding its roots in a 5,000-year-old Indian healing tradition, Invanti is made from 97% naturally-derived ingredients, including a mix of traditional Indian herbs, to help invigorate the scalp and its follicles. The three Invanti products comprise of an exfoliating shampoo, thickening conditioner, and scalp revitalizer — all designed with the intention of removing unhealthy buildup and reducing the rate of hair loss. We also found that it makes a killer volumizer for when your locks are looking a little limp and need to be refreshed. The Aveda product formulas were created in consultation with renowned traditional-medicine doctors from India, who worked with Aveda’s Botanical Laboratory.

And that's why you don’t have to travel to India to get your hands on this new miracle product. The Palms Hotel & Spa already has Invanti in stock. And if you just want to try it, simply book a blowout and the salon stylists will happily wash your hair with it. Growing pains not included.

Hot Hair Trick: Skip The Scary Chemicals With This Vegan Mane-Straightening System

Zerran-Reallisse-MiamiAny hair product that requires a gas mask during application can’t be good for you. And while we’re all desperate to find a magic potion that shields our locks from Miami’s humidity, formaldehyde-drenched systems have proven not to be worth the ill effects. (We’ll take some curl over a nosebleed any day, thankyouverymuch.)

But, the fact that you're (rightfully) averse to harmful chemicals doesn't mean you have to resign yourself to a frizzy mane. Zerran RealLisse is the first 100-percent vegan (and formaldehyde-free) hair smoothing system on the market. It's available in Florida exclusively at Salon Vaso, so make your appointment ASAP. Oh, and bonus: The keratin alternative lasts up to four months and is a pretty much pain-free process, since it's washed out immediately after the flatiron process.

Don’t expect to find any hard-to-read ingredients or animal products in Zerran’s recipe — the semi-permanent treatment is so safe you can eat it. We wouldn't suggest it, but hey, to each her own.

Zerran RealLisse, starting at $180, available at Salon Vaso, 1500 Alton Road, 2nd Floor; 305-674-7470 .

These Romantic, Mermaid Braids Are Perfect For Poolside

It's Swim Week in Miami, and that means the runways are full of bikinis instead of couture. But it's also the perfect time to glean some extra summertime hairstyle inspiration. Case in point: The hippie-meets-Little Mermaid braids at Mara Hoffman Swim. TRESemmé hairstylist Elsa Canedo created the look and added extra volume by prepping hair with TRESemmé Thermal Creations Curl Activator Spray, then using a one-inch barrel curling iron to curl the entire head. But if you want to forgo the extra oomph and skip straight to the braids, here's the how-to:

1. Flip your hair upside-down and spray on some dry shampoo for added texture. Lightly comb the product through with your fingers.
2. Flip your head upright, then create a middle-part and divide hair into sections.
3. Create two French braids that start at the front and go along the sides of the head, all the way to the base of the neck.
4. When the two French braids meet, switch to fishtail braids and secure with clear hair ties. Leave some of the length on the ends loose.
5. Lightly rough up the hair at the top of the head, pulling a few pieces loose with your fingers. Finish with by lightly applying an anti-frizz cream.

TRESemmé Fresh Start Dry Shampoo, $5.49, and Tresemmé No-Frizz Secret Smoothing Creme, $4.75, both available at Drugstore.com. Mara Hoffman Swim '12 image courtesy of TRESemmé.
