A cable-car system connects Medellín to the favelas in the surrounding mountains. This recent addition is perhaps the city's most important improvement. Years ago, mountain residents couldn't get into the city for regular work. This isolation directly led to the evolution of the drug trade as a means of commerce in these neighborhoods. This inexpensive, reliable transit system changed all that.
