Marie Claire Publishes An Anti-Fat Article, We Object

It seems as if Marie Claire is ditching their plus-size inclusive attitude, that Ashely Falcon and her column, "Big Girl In A Skinny World" helped build. Marie Claire ran a story on Monday titled " Should 'Fatties' Get A Room ?" deploring the new CBS show, Mike & Molly, for featuring obese actors. Says writer Maura Kelly, "I think I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other ... because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. [...] I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room—just like I'd find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine addict slumping in a chair." We can write a novel about what we find so odious about her opinions and Marie Claire's handling of the situation, but we'll just say this: Your weight is a tiny part of who you are and what you can accomplish, but in our image-obsessed culture, it oftentimes seems like your pant size directly affects how much other people think you deserve. And of course, there are tons of social and political factors that have a nasty way of affecting your health—whether you have the time to cook your own healthy meals, whether you have the money to buy healthier options, whether you're close to grocery stores and restaurants that offer healthy products, whether you were raised and are surrounded by others who support healthy eating... all of these have to be skewed in someone's favor.
We're about living a life of style, and we support injecting thoughtfulness into every part of a person's life—from the clothes they put on in the morning to the foods they put in their bodies. Promoting those types of lifestyles is something we feel strongly about—and we know that these types of articles are not the way to do it. The right ways? We haven't exactly figured it out, but we hope we're on the right track.
