Does Vogue's Ban Of Underage And Anorexic Models Go Far Enough?

vogue-thin-may-1Did we just witness the first truly eventful step toward industry-wide responsible editorial casting? Condé Nast International has just released a statement effectively and almost immediately banning models either under the age of 16 or suffering from an eating disorder from appearing in 19 international editions of Vogue (including Anna Wintour’s U.S. title).

Undersigned by Chairman Jonathan Newhouse, the six-point statement seems to have a great deal of force behind it. Though phrases like “knowingly” and “appear to” dull its sharpness, the pact could represent a welcome attitude adjustment for the world’s preeminent (and perhaps most criticized) fashion title. Proposing the use of verifiable I.D.s for young models, better working conditions, and various support programs is particularly laudable.

The statement also reads, “We will be ambassadors for the message of a healthy body image,” and, “We will work with models who, in our view, are healthy and help to promote a healthy body image.” Encouraging, yes. But it seems the power to craft a title’s particular concept of a, “healthy body,” and decide which models, “appear to have an eating disorder,” remains with the very editors who may be responsible for perpetuating the problem the pact addresses. Anna Wintour, for example, may still determine U.S. Vogue’s physical ideal.

Only time — and many Vogue issues — will tell if she and the hundreds of Vogue editors around the world will rise to the challenge of this statement. But it’s a good start and, maybe, a good day for fashion. (New York Times)

Read the statement here and tell us, is Vogue doing enough?

It's A Girl! Jessica Simpson Strikes A Very Familiar (Naked) Pose For Elle

Naked-cover1-1

Well, it's not like we haven't seen this shot before. We know photographers can't trademark a pose or anything, but if you were modeling a new baby bump on the cover of a magazine, wouldn't you at least want to do it in an original manner? We're pretty sure we would (since the cover shoot offers are obvi rolling in), and that's why we feel unsure about the oh-so-obvious April Elle cover featuring a very pregnant Jessica Simpson. Are they trying to recreate the magic of the Demi Moore VF cover? Or more likely, with the windswept blonde hair, the Britney Spears Bazaar cover, inspired by the original?

Regardless, she beautifully bares all, and tells all, too! Apparently the Fashion Star mentor's body told her a bun was in the oven in a rather odd way: “We were goin’ to have an all-day drinking binge. Gonna ride our bikes, hang out…do naughty things. But I started feeling this overwhelming guilt. Why would I feel guilt at the idea of going out and having cocktails with my friends?” We certainly hope she showed some restraint that day, because a baby gal is on the way! (Elle)

But let's get to the point here. Is this cover gorg or derivative? Or both?

Our New Favorite Olsen Hits The Cover Of ASOS

Not that we've given up on The Twins, but with an impressive turn in Martha Marcy May Marlene and a budding career as an indie darling, Elizabeth is the Olsen sister with the most currently exciting trajectory – and style. Her approach to mixing sophisticated pieces (Céline, Isabel Marant, Marni with true teen picks — think cut-off jeans and colorful tops) is softer and lighter than her more famous siblings.

And that's one of the major reasons we so dug into her new ASOS magazine Todd Cole editorial and interview as soon as it popped up over here. Wearing armfuls of ASOS, Levi's, and a touch of her sisters' Elizabeth and James (half-named for her, if you didn't already know) in a teen-scrapbook style photoshoot, Lizzie masters a light, colorful look we'll be sure to replicate come spring, and offers tidbits on growing up Olsen, in a must-read interview. Oh, and there's even a behind-the-scenes vid to boot. (ASOS)

Zooey Deschanel Gets Silly On The Cover Of Allure

zooey-embedFrom her surprisingly soulful singing voice to HelloGiggles, we’re totally obsessed with Zooey Deschanel. And whether you love her or hate her, you have to admit that she’s been on a hot streak lately: She's got a hit show (New Girl) and her quirky Golden Globes manicure was the talk of the red carpet (sorry, Angelina). Even the President of the United States took time out from running the country to wish her a happy birthday!

So, it was no surprise to us that she landed Allure’s February cover, her huge blue eyes and trademark bangs practically popping off the page. "I'm bangs and eyes," she says in the interview. "It's who I am. There have been periods when I've grown my bangs out, but I always cut them back, so it's like, why go through the trouble?"

You can see the newest It Girl – a term Zooey thinks is both confusing and funny – glammed up in Dolce & Gabbana and Jason Wu when the issue hits newsstands January 24th. (Don’t worry, she’ll be making silly faces in all of those fancy frocks). If you can’t wait that long, you can check out photos and behind-the-scenes video from her cover shoot on Allure’s web site.

Cover Alert: Demi Finally Spills To Bazaar After Her Split!

6-hbz-deme-moore-frb-2012-cover-xl

Pals Demi Moore and Amanda de Cadenet go way back, and it's evident by their candid discussion in Bazaar's February issue. The pair tackle poignant issues like guilty pleasures, spirituality, and yes, even infidelity. Addressing her biggest fears, Demi says, "I would say what scares me is that I'm going to ultimately find out at the end of my life that I'm really not lovable, that I'm not worthy of being loved. That there's something fundamentally wrong with me." You can expect more of these authentic tête-à-têtes when the two beauties team up this spring for The Conversation, a show full of frank female discussions with cronies like Lady Gaga, Gwyneth, and DVF.

Who's The Most Fascinating Actor? Vanity Fair Starts A Leading Man War

vanity-fair-february-2012-cover-leading-men

When our beloved Vanity Fair slips into our mailbox, we without fail flip to the Proust Questionnaire first. Call us creeps, but we just love this particular brand of prying into celeb's lives; it's such a tried-and-true method of brain picking! And, it looks like that in the coming weeks the mag will be treating us to three profiles to devourMatt Damon, George Clooney, and Daniel Craig pose as the hottest trio of played-spies-in-movies (and most likely actors to win Oscars) ever on the mag's Feb cover. Apparently George would like to be reincarnated as his dog, Daniel is self-conscious about his knees, and Matt really is the consummate family man. We'll be anxiously awaiting the mailman for this sleuth-y snoop! Oh, and fill us in: Which leading man do you think is the most fascinating?

Photoshopping Controversies: What If The Photographer Was…The Bad Guy…

Mr. Evil Retoucher, aka the guy behind the guy behind the lens, gets a pretty bad rap. Some see him (or her) as the dark lord who holds the power to make our self-esteems plummet. With one click of a mouse, Gisele's chest gets bigger, Adriana Lima's tummy gets tighter (as if it's possible), and consequently, our body images sink and plates shrink. Well, according to Fashionista, this master manipulator selling us lies and fake eyelashes may not actually be the villain after all.

After the Taylor-gate brouhaha, Retouchers Anonymous has come forward to point the finger at the shoddy job fashion photogs do at shoots, claiming that lackluster efforts are expected to be fixed in post-production (which supposedly results in over-Photoshopping). No matter who's the true culprit, photo fixing is a fact of life, but it seems to us that it's a slippery slope that needs some serious regulation. Where do you weigh-in on this heavy topic?

The Olsens Land Their FIRST Vogue Cover (In the Sister Issue, Obvi)

MK & A prove, once again, that nothing beats a rocking set of genes. The duo have landed on the cover of Vogue's special edition "Best Dressed" issue that will hit newsstands (then quickly fly off) on November 15. Like us, it seems that Anna's got a thing for twins since she finally put The Row designers on their first cover, after a long-overdue and well-deserved wait. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have also found themselves in the company of other biologically connected beauties, including Hollywood youngin's Dakota and Elle Fanning, royalty Kate and Pippa Middleton, the divine Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, runway superstars Lily and Ruby Aldridge, and style-star heiresses Claire and Virginie Clarins, who all appear in the glossy. Inspired by pair after pair of extraordinary siblings, Vogue calls 2011 the "Year Of The Sister;" a title that makes all our hearts smile. We're kinda dying to get our hands on the sure-to-be picturesque issue, and sure, we'll share it with big sis, too. (Fashionista)

Get Ready For A Billion Movies And TV Shows Featuring Conde Nast

There was GQ in Friends With Benefits. Vanity Fair in The Insider. Vogue in The September Issue. W in Gossip Girl.

Now, Conde Nast is official pushing hard on the gas, and has hired a team of development people to pitch Conde Nast-centric script ideas in Hollywood. Dawn Ostroff, who heads up Conde Nast's entertainment division, is looking for a handful of people to create and pitch "TV shows, reality shows, movies, documentaries, web shorts, a digital channel…" and probably more, to feature Conde Nast publications, front and center. Move over Ryan Gosling… we feel like there's a new buzzworthy lead on the horizon. (WWD)

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Looks Crazy Beautiful On Vogue's Cover

Vogue has just posted the first official photo of their November issue featuring Rooney Mara. This is the star of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’s first time covering Vogue, but given the insane buzz around both her and the movie, we doubt it will be her last. Wearing a dress with a dragon embroidered on the back on the cover—how cheeky Ms. Wintour—the editorial is stunningly beautiful and haunting—we love the contrast of her pale skin, dark bowl cut bob, and orange lipstick. We're so used to Mara looking scary as hell and ready to beat us up that's it's kinda genius to remind us that she is indeed a one very glamourous chick. Of course, we highly recommend you get involved and read the accompanying article: She talks about her relationship with director David Fincher ("It’s fucking weird," says Daniel Craig), her love of “freaking people out,” and how she transformed into the iconic Lisbeth Salandar. Adam Levine Is Weirdly Naked With His Model GF On Russian Vogue's Cover

We get it, Adam Levine. You love getting nekkid, and we don’t blame you. In fact, we appreciate it. While the Maroon 5 singer stripped down NSFW-style earlier this year for Cosmopolitan UK in order to raise awareness for testicular cancer, this month, the crooner and his super-gorge supermodel GF Anne V. have taken it all off for the cover of Russian Vogue. Now, we’re not sure if this is to raise awareness about anything other than the fact that these two make a smokin’ hot couple, but no matter—we sure are enjoying you hard work—and the shout out to your home town, Los Angeles, on that bicep. Our only qualm? What they did to his torso inside the mag. (USmagazine)

Katy Perry Goes Very Pink For Her Latest Cover

While we’re all but immune to getting shocked by Katy Perry’s hairstyles, her pink period seems to be here to stay. She debuted her hot head hue a few days before the VMAs, and now she’s covering InStyle rocking her rose locks. We’ve seen her with black, blue, purple, and tie-dyed tresses, but we’re still on the fence about her current color—does it feel like she’s copying Gwen Stefani from her Return Of Saturn era, or do you think Katy’s pink phase is a bright spot in her hair history?
