We Put These Long-Wear Products To The Test At Our Holiday Dance Party

Photographed by Nina Westervelt.
We take most long-wear claims with the proverbial grain of salt. Not many of them can last through five hours of sitting at a desk — let alone eight hours of dancing and sweating. But we're always open to being proven wrong. So when a fresh batch of products rolled up to our desks about the same time as our holiday party invitations landed in our inboxes, we were struck with an idea. Why not test out these products there and see if they held up?

We tapped four R29-ers and asked them to incorporate one product into their look for the evening. Then we checked in with them every hour for a photograph to see how the pigments were lasting — and how their buzzes were progressing.

If you've ever worried about how your makeup will look when you're five drinks deep, then click on to see our brave and tipsy volunteers show off how the products stood up in the tropics. (Fine, it was in Brooklyn, but there were leis and umbrella toothpicks aplenty at the party.)

Courtney - 9 P.M.
Courtney Yates, our executive assistant, was dying to try a metallic eye for the long-wear challenge, so we tossed her a few of Maybelline's latest Color Tattoo shades. "They are some really great pigments," she said. "They definitely need a bit of building, though, so you'll have to layer the product over and over." Courtney actually suggests using the Color Tattoos as a base and then popping another pigment on top.

After an hour, the pigment didn't seem to have moved at all.

Overall, Courtney had a positive experience with the shadows — even though the hue wasn't as punchy as she was hoping. "I didn't have to touch up again!" she said. And with the amount of dancing that we witnessed her doing that night, that's pretty impressive.

Piera - 9 P.M.
Since our holiday theme was tropical, our executive creative director and cofounder, Piera Gelardi, wanted a juicy coral lip. We hooked her up with Armani's new lip magnet liquid lipstick, which has insane long-lasting claims. Plus, it matched her incredible headdress.

When she applied the lipstick at 9 p.m., Piera said it went on like a dream. "It was very smooth, and it didn't dry my lips."

The color continued to hold out after an hour of dancing and drinks. Piera didn't reapply the pigment throughout the night. "I was too busy dancing!" she said.

Piera - 11 P.M.
This is the last photo of the night, but Piera says the pigment lasted much longer than that. "When I got home at 4:30 a.m., it was almost completely intact, other than a little fading in the inner lip area — the part that had come into contact with numerous adult beverages," she said. "It was a really subtle fade, not the 'grandma lips' that I usually have when I forget to reapply lipstick and many hours go by." She used an oil-based remover, and the gorgeous coral came right off.

Piera loved the pigment so much that she actually used it again the next day. "The lipstick in particular was very impressive because of the texture and the fact that it wasn't drying or flaking," she said. We call this one a winner.

Landon - 9 P.M.
When we told Landon Peoples, our fashion editorial assistant, about this challenge, he had one request: a blood-red lipstick. This new lip color from CoverGirl fit the bill. But the stuff may have worked a little too well. "I noticed the color dried rather quickly," he said. "I knew I had to act fast, so I enlisted the help of someone more experienced to put it on me. It came off pretty easily during the application process, meaning I took a Q-tip with some makeup remover to clean up the rough edges. But the end of the night was a different story."

Landon - 10 P.M.
Despite all the dancing and drinking, Landon didn't touch up all night. "I had several friends on lip-stain duty throughout the night, and they reassured me it was fine any time I asked," he said. "No touch-ups were necessary."

Unfortunately, the removal was more than a little difficult. "Nothing worked — not makeup remover, wipes, face wash, body wash, hand soap," he said. "I had to use literal dish soap and a hot rag to scrape it off. The next day, my lips were a little raw and the area of my mouth was kinda itchy and dry. But the color came completely off." We also suggest an oil-based remover for this baby — or just pure coconut oil.

Arianna - 9 P.M.
When we asked Arianna Davis, our entertainment features writer, what product she wanted to test-drive, she answered immediately. "I've been searching for a highlighter that will give me the perfect Jennifer Lopez glow for ages," she said. So we hooked her up with a few of Urban Decay's AfterGlow highlighters, which claim to stick for eight hours.

"Using a brush, I applied six to seven strokes on each cheekbone," she said. "At first it was hard to see, but by about the third or fourth stroke, it looked really pretty and shimmery."

"Thanks to our holiday party's margaritas, I sweat quite a bit," Arianna said. But it looks like the shimmer held up pretty well.

According to Arianna, the glow lasted all night long — and it wasn't because of the tequila. "By the time I got home at 2 a.m., the highlighter was a bit faded, though still visible and shimmery," she said. Arianna says she'd definitely use the highlighter again. "I got so many compliments on it throughout the night that I felt as luminous as J.Lo. Almost."
