Tim Nguyen, 21, Associate Designer for Jewelry
What does your role encompass from day to day?
"Every day I consult with the Senior Designer and go through the direction and inspiration for the upcoming collection. I'm
constantly updating my mood board with new silhouettes, stones, and metals. I sit surrounded by images, markers, rulers, and a roll of tracing paper sketching endlessly and refining the designs to be potential pieces in the final collection."
How did you score your gig?
"I interned for Kelly last summer. And, I had originally applied for a position in fashion design, but my drawing skills were needed in the jewelry department. Even though I've been hired as the Associate Jewelry Designer, any spare time I have is spent assisting the fashion and home department with sketches."
Why do you think your personality is best suited for the company?
"The company encompasses interiors, jewelry, and fashion, which match my personal passions for so many different creative genres. As a fresh name in the fashion world, Kelly's brand is growing rapidly, and her youthful edge and vintage-inspired
taste blend with who I am."
What's been your most memorable moment with the company thus far?
"I get such a rush of excitement when I see my designs realized as jewelry samples. But, hands down, my most memorable moment must be the time Kelly came up to my desk and said, 'Tim, I have a special project for you,' and it turned out I had to customize her puppet alien baby for her Halloween party. I revamped the baby-blanket with denim and painted the entire thing silver. It turned out that her alien spawn was a hit at the party!"
What's the biggest perk to your job?
"Getting to see all the new home accessories and trying on clothes and jewelry from the latest collections before they hit shelves."
How would you describe your work environment in five words or less?
"Innovative, lighthearted, and magical."
What items have you been lusting after?
"Oh boy, I should probably write a letter to Santa. For the home, I am obsessed with the Double Hands Sculpture and Bronze Legs Sculpture. As for accessories, I die for the Gold Horn Ring, Sphere Cuff, and Oblique Scarf. And, from the ready-to-wear collection, the Rebel Punched Dress, which I'd wear as a top with a button-up underneath."
