Double Play: Two L.A. pop-ups make it clear that clever shopping is still on the menu
These days, it's no secret that stores have to go the extra mile for us to drop our hard-earned dough. Nowhere does this seem more apparent than in Los Angeles this week, where two boutiques are welcoming brand-new shop-within-shops. For the next two weeks, downtown indie boutique Ooga Booga is playing host to Mary Ping's line Slow and Steady Wins the Race, and newly opened TenOverSix is launching its first pop-up installation with Leana Zuniga's Electric Feathers.
It's refreshing to come across Electric Feathers hand-crafted made-to-order collection, which features Zuniga's hand-painted cotton dresses, draped hooded jackets, funnel-neck mini-dresses, as well as an assortment of hats, scarves, shoes, and jewelry designed with the New York-based Randi Mates. Inspired by the L.A. day-to-night lifestyle, Zuniga creates pieces that are seasonless and can be easily transformed by the wearer with adjustable drawstring details and removable sashes.
By contrast, Mary Ping's approach to design is a bit more conceptual. Inspired by a Kiki Smith quote, "A good idea should be like a good perfume. It should permeate the air and linger," her two-week Ooga Booga shop makes its mark with a selection of limited-run clothing, bags, shoes, and perfume, including a basic white T-shirt crafted in lace and silk, her signature circle sunglasses, zip-vest sweatshirts, and cutout platform wedge sandals—all priced at $100 a pop. Certainly, something to make everyones' wallets a bit happier.
TenOverSix, 7427 Beverly Boulevard, (at North Vista Street); 323-330-9355; Ooga Booga, 943 North Broadway, #203, (near West College Street); 213-617-1105. Also, for more information, go to www.slowandsteadywinstherace.com and www.electricfeathers.com.
