Two of the biggest local buzz words of 2012 are coming together in 2013. No, this is not a Portlandia skit, it's The Juice Pedaler, a hybrid juice bar/bike shop that just opened in Prospect Park. (Where else?) But seriously, this is a genius idea. Looking like a Roald Dahl location come to life, the charming and cheerful spot is billed the first of its kind, simultaneously offering bike accessories, bike rentals, full-service bike repair and a cafe serving fresh, locally-sourced organic juices and Stumptown coffee.
Now, to the decor: Inspired by '70s California culture, the Juice Pedaler makes use of cycling's colorful racing stripes, throws in distressed metal lawn chairs, and lots of reclaimed wood (oh, and an indoor fireplace!). The best part? A backyard sports deck with an edible herb garden, kitchsy-cool hanging lanterns, and, of course, lots of bikes. Owners Deborah Capone and Nicole Bilu call it "a healthy candy store," citing not just the yummy smoothies, but the bright hues that make for an instant pick-me-up. Rent a bike for $30 a day (or $15 for a two-hour stint), perfect for daily errands or an errant snap from Garance Doré. Pedal, meet metal.
