Whether it’s for an art-worthy Vogue cover or a dazzling red carpet look for an Oscar-nominated starlet, Ted Gibson is the most sought-after name in hair right now. So, when R29 Reserve decided to do an exclusive (and amazing) offer with
Ted Gibson Salon, I expected to do an interview with the handsome tress master. Turns out, he had other plans. When I got to the gorgeous 5th Avenue salon and met the man of the hour, he almost immediately shuffled me into a robe and sat me down in front of the mirror. It seemed we were going to have a little chop with our chat…and a little color as well! The result? A sassy, new head of hair and a huge crush on Ted Gibson. Oh, and I managed to get an interview somewhere in there as well. Check it out — don’t you want to know how Ryan Gosling likes his lady’s locks?

It’s party season! What are some chic and easy ways to dress up our hair for holiday events?
"Take a hairstyle that you’re comfortable with and give it a twist. For example, make a ponytail on the top of your head and twist the hair into a simple bun. Then you can add a cool headband or some kind of jeweled pin or comb to make it more formal."

We love braids! What are some tips on how to pull off this style without looking like a second-grader?
"First of all, if you’re of a certain age, you should not wear pigtails! But, I love braids. There are so many ways to wear them either casually or for a formal event, like incorporated into a chignon. I think the key is to not make your braids too perfect. That’ll keep them looking fresh — you know, bohemian but still downtown."

You style everything from photo shoots to fashion shows to red carpet looks to makeovers on What Not To Wear. Do you have a favorite gig?
"I love a makeover! Whether it’s creating a red carpet look for the Oscars or creating a brand new look for a contestant on What Not To Wear, I love being a part of a transformation.

So, how does it actually work when you’re creating a red carpet look? Is the hairstyle decided on days in advance, or is it a game-time decision?
"It completely depends on the person. As a hairdresser, I always tell my staff that you have to know how to do many different things. You have to have a repertoire of techniques in order to create something on the spot. Because the dress can dictate everything, and if the dress changes at the last minute, you have to be able to improvise. Sometimes a client only has three hours to do everything — hair, makeup, dress — so it’s stressful, but I love it!"
Look how blonde!
Who was the celebrity client that really wowed you and gave you that “oh, my god" moment?
"Angelina Jolie. I flew to London to do the covers of Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire all in one day with Patrick Demarchelier. After that, I worked with Angelina for about seven years, and it was the most incredible experience. I like a woman who really knows what she wants, and she does! It’s still one of the highlights of my career."

Okay, last question: At Refinery29, we all have a mutual love for Ryan Gosling. What kind of haircut do you think would attract the Gos?
"I think he would be attracted to someone who is a little more bohemian and natural but still has an edge. So, her hair could be long or short, but it would be more about how she styles it — not too polished, sexy without trying too hard."All made over!
