Discuss: Are Inaugural Dress Designers Actually Cursed?

When an under-the-radar designer wins the inaugural-gown lottery, it probably feels a bit like the sky opening up — there's instant fame, publicity, global attention, and a spot in the National Museum of American History. But for nearly every designer, the inaugural dress has meant their downfall. Longtime Washington Post fashion-critic (who left the failed Daily Beast and is now freelancing for the Post) penned a think piece on the triumphs and tribulations of those once-promising designers, and the evidence is a bit shocking: The designers behind Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush's inaugural gowns foundered in the wake of increased demand; Narciso Rodriguez and Isabel Toledo have struggled with finances; and Michelle Obama-favorite Maria Pinto has shuttered her line. The only one to escape the supposed curse? Jason Wu, whom Givhan reveals as the consumate businessman. Now we wonder: Who will be this year's chosen designer — and what will happen to him or her after January 19? (The Washington Post)
