You do this for a living! We'd love to know your top three do's and don'ts in small spaces.
"Do incorporate hand-me-down items, family heirlooms, and art made by people you know, or artists you love. Do add color in your furniture, art, and accessories — find things that are old and disgusting and transform them into something beautiful and unique. For example, find some chairs that have a good shape but are upholstered in ugly fabric, and have them re-upholstered in a beautiful color that you'll love forever. This way you have something that no one else has, and that's designed for your specific tastes!
Don't buy matching living room sets, bedroom sets, or dining room sets. Instead, collect furniture pieces that compliment each other, but are different finishes, colors, and materials. Don't rely on wall paint for your color. It's better to have a reserved paint palette and add color through art and objects. Don't place things on a diagonal — square them so they're parallel against the wall. Kooky diagonals drive me nuts!"
