What is the first step to take when searching for the perfect job?
"I believe the first step is absolutely doing an internship. Internships give you real life experience in a potential field you may want to pursue after you graduate. Doing an internship is also a good way to figure out whether a job is the right fit for you. Afterward, you may decide you want to switch gears and change your major."
What is the wisest piece of interview advice you've ever been given/given to others?
"Be prepared and do my homework. By that I mean, research the company you are applying to and the people who work there. Be well informed about company policies, the position you are applying for, and what you can offer them based on that research. During the interview, always be mindful that eye contact is very important. It sends a message of confidence and shows interest. That goes a long way. Finally, be yourself. Nothing is worse than an interviewee who is trying too hard, or who comes across as phony or desperate."
How can readers make themselves stand out professionally among other job applicants?
"By sending, via mail, a hand written thank you note after the interview is over. In this day of modern technology where emails and or texting have become popular, quick and convenient, taking time to write a note is a great personal touch that can set you apart from other applicants. By referencing something from the interview in your note, you let the other person know you were interested and engaged which helps cement your interview in the mind of a potential employee."
