To help figure out where our eating minds were these past 365 days, our friends at Google have shared the top food-calorie searches from 2014. Here are the most-asked calorie questions — and the answers.

How many calories are in a banana?

105 in a medium-sized banana.

How many calories are in pumpkin pie?

323 per commercially-manufactured slice.

How many calories are in an apple?

95 in a medium-sized one with the skin.

How many calories are in an egg?

78 in a large, hard-boiled egg, including both the yolk and the white.

How many calories are in an avocado?

About 250 in a whole avocado.

How many calories are in a cheeseburger?

About 300 for a single-patty burger at most fast-food places.

How many calories are in a Big Mac?

A big 530.

How many calories are in watermelon?

About 85 in a big wedge.

How many calories are in an orange?

62 in a medium-sized fruit.

How many calories are in a slice of pizza?
285 in a standard, commercially-produced slice.

However, as we've written before, the amount of calories someone actually needs to eat is a complicated issue that depends on several factors (such as age and body weight) that naturally differ from person to person. Because all calories are not created equally, counting them is often a fruitless task. Instead, we should probably spend more time making sure we get all the nutrition our individual bodies need, rather than keeping those calories within an arbitrary number range.
