Photographed by Geordy Pearson. Blisters. Aching feet. Difficulty walking. These are the usual gripes people have with wearing heels, but not me. From pumps to wedges to high-heeled sandals, I wouldn't mind battling sore feet and cobblestone streets if it weren't for my only issue with the vertiginous shoes: my height.
My shorter friends can get away with wearing heels without anyone even noticing there's a stiletto peeking out from under those pants. But if I wear heels? At almost 5'10" plus four inches courtesy of my J.Crew wedges, you're gonna notice. And, I'm really not the type to crave attention.
Don't get me wrong: There's plenty I like about being tall. You know how some puppies have huge paws that they have to grow into? Well, I had to grow into my long legs. I'm pretty sure they've been the same length since I was about 10. These days, they're a bit more proportionate and less baby deer-like, but they're still pretty long, so I really can't complain there. But, I think every tall girl can relate to wanting to wear heels without soaring over everyone's heads. And, being able to peer over the tops of trees. Okay, I might be exaggerating on the second one, but you get the idea. It's just a bit difficult to be subtle about slipping on a pair of pumps. Oh, and don't get me started on trying to find non-midi or maxi-dresses that are long enough to wear with heels to the office. That, my friends, is a tall order.
But, what about a compromise, you say? Perhaps a kitten heel? Well, I'd have to politely decline, as there's little in fashion I despise more than the kitten heel. Wearing heels is an all-or-nothing situation for me. It's either the flattest of flats (I won't buy anything with more than an inch heel) or the four- or five-inch heel when I can muster up the courage.
I know I should probably just embrace it. I mean, look at long-legged girls like Blake Lively, Miranda Kerr, and Charlize Theron. They wear heels like it's nobody's business — even if it means they're taller than their beaus, as in Theron's case. (You'd have to be living under a rock to not know she's dating Sean Penn, right?) I constantly look to taller celebrities like these for style inspiration, so I've vowed to try to jump on board with their love of the lofty shoe. The view's better up there anyway.
