Umbro by Kim Jones makes the getaway an everyday possibility. By Valery Joseph
umbrokimjones_aztecbagFour years have passed since Umbro paired up with British designer Kim Jones to create a street-centric line of sportswear-inspired accessories. And while plenty of other similar Big Brand/Cool Designer partnerships quickly came and went, Jones' smart spin on sport-meets-street continues to provoke. Case in point: Any sportswear line can craft a respectable gym bag, but creating a practical tote that's worthy of multiple everyday possibilities pushes beyond the predictable.
Spare yet functional, the Aztec Trim Weekender is deceptively simple—its four roomy buckle and drawstring pouches remind one of a standard issue army rucksack—and flourishes are few, the lone exception being a subtle Aztec pattern trim in an unobtrusive shade of smoky gray. The focus instead here is on its utilitarian design, a welcome repose from the market's surplus of overwrought and over-thought bag concoctions. Whether packed with gym gear or a few necessities for a pre-winter disappearing act, Jones' Weekender makes sure all your impromptu needs are in the bag.
Umbro by Kim Jones Aztec Trim Weekender, about $145, available at Rolo San Francisco, 415-979-8795, and online at www.gargyle.com
