14 Clever Style Lessons For An NYC Fall

We've known Frances Kwon (and, of course, her amazing style blog, Pink Horrorshow) since she was just a wee lil' thing kicking around the Internet. Now just look at her. Kwon is a business unto herself, schooling her leagues of followers on the finer points of fashion, living, beauty, and more from the comfort of her beautiful Flatiron-area apartment. Quite the life, right?
Well, we asked her to spin a few lessons for you folks. First off, we wanted to get in deep on this whole Flatiron business. We mean, we're familiar with the Ace Hotel, but we could use a little help seeing NYC the way she does. Secondly, we wanted an assist on replicating her whole chic, effortless, "oh-this-old-thing?" look.

Lucky us, Kwon gave us an Instagram slideshow, featuring her favorite, no-sweat fall looks. It's a look into her charmed life, along with a primer on what she thinks will be trending in the coming months and how to anchor your looks with a bit of help from the right Clarks boots. Since it's coming up on the season where you're probably working too hard to really plan out your casual approach, this could come in very handy.

"I just love my neighborhood, the Flatiron. See, during weekends, it’s pretty quiet, so taking Ezzie, my rescue lab-mix, for long walks and finding new places I haven’t noticed before is a great little escape. He's such a ham — you'd think I was telling him the most interesting story of his life in this photo."

I love that denim jackets made a comeback in recent seasons. (I practically lived in them when I was younger!) In the fall, I still wear lots of shorts and minidresses with a jacket thrown on top. I guess you could call it my favorite 'formula.' I’d wear this whole outfit during the day or night (dog-walking sessions included)."

"These Jolissa Topaz black booties are a little more formal with a sleek buckle on the side, so they’re great for going out. The heel is a perfect height for those extra inches, but they’re low enough that I can walk for blocks and won’t be dying to take them off. Actually, I can't even begin to explain how comfortable they are."

"One of my favorite things about my apartment is my view. This is what can see of Queens and Brooklyn from my kitchen. Through another window, I see the Empire State Building every day. It’s the last thing I see when I go to sleep."

"My apartment is where I spend most of my time — it's my comfort zone, and the decor really reflects my personality. Right here, I'm standing in the usual spot where I take photos for my blog. I prefer plain backgrounds, so that outfits can really pop"

Here, I've got on my favorite black pants by J Brand with the Mission Zelle boots. I’ve had this J.Crew striped shirt for about four years now, and it’s become one of my absolute favorite items in my closet. I love mixing the stripes with another print, like a floral, which makes it more fun, or just keeping it very simple and classic with solid pants like I did here."

"I took a little outfit 'collage' shot with Levi’s jeans, a J.Crew leopard sweater, my PS1 bag, Luv Aj necklace, Madewell sunglasses, and the Mission Zelle boots for you. The Proenza Schouler PS1 bag is so incredibly versatile. It's the ideal work bag for me — understated and not too flashy or adorned with designer logos. Fall is the perfect season to really bring out these kind of essential pieces you've splurged on.

I thought the brown booties would match the look, since they are also very understated but are a great color and easy-to-match. You know, I have so many black boots that I started looking for the perfect brown pair. So happy these Mission Zelles came my way, because the shape, color, and comfort level is perfect."

"You can never go wrong presenting a great pair of kicks on top of classic and beautifully designed coffee-table books. I was a photography major at Parsons, so I have quite a collection of them. The top one was a birthday gift."

"I used to thrive on biking in the city. Then last year I got into a little accident, which has made me nervous to hop back on. This fall, though, I’m making a commitment to get back into it. Wish me luck!"

"My favorite utility jacket and distressed boyfriend jeans go hand in hand when I need to throw something on quick but still want to look casual yet put-together for fall. They’re foolproof. I tend to rotate the same few pieces that I love with just a few accessories and basics switched in and out."

This is across the street from the Ace Hotel, a spot I frequent because it’s close by — although it is a bit dangerous to my wallet. (Opening Ceremony always lures me in!)"

"The low-heel booties are one of my favorite ways to play up the laid-back quality of any look. I love how these look with the cropped pant and some ankle showing through."

"I was surprised when they first put this installation by Orly Genger in Madison Square Park. Honestly, I thought it was pretty hideous. But after a few visits, I started to recognize its beauty. Putting up these giant colored walls really made me see the space differently. Generally, though, Madison Square Park at dusk is truly magical. Doesn’t hurt that my favorite burger place is right here, too."

"Leather (and more leather) is huge this fall. I’m happy designers are still coming out with chic and edgy pieces, whether it’s the classic biker jacket or a fitted pencil leather skirt, I can’t stop drooling over the stuff. Here's my favorite leather jacket — Acne Mape — paired with the black booties. They both have this chic biker quality, so I thought they'd match perfectly."

"The Lower East Side is where my boyfriend lives, but it's also where I head to most often when I go out at night. I love shooting down here, since there are so many great street-art pieces that provide great backdrops. I like how this piece along Bowery is colorblocked."

"Oh, and this space next to the rag & bone store on Houston features murals that change! This one is White Noise by Henry Samelson."

"Remember I was telling you about my view? Well, some mornings, when I wake up very early for no particular reason, I love catching the sunrise. It’s such a treat. The city is so quiet and serene while colors light up the sky. I'm so lucky to have this view."
