4 Quick And Easy Salon-Approved DIY Summer Hairstyles

Sure, we love reading about new summer hairstyles, but it’s rare that we find a cute little ‘do we can actually recreate at home—until now. Voilà: Now we’ve got four! We asked Oxenrose stylist Rachel ‘Rox’ Krantz to show a group of locals gals, all with different lengths, colors, and textures of locks, a handful of cute runway-worthy looks that can be done outside salon walls (we promise!) and take a whopping five minutes to whip up. How can you nail all the styles, from bright-pink tips to an elegant fishtail braid? Just follow our super-easy instructions!

Beverley’s Topsy Tuck—Cure run-of-the-mill bun blues with this sleek ‘90s-inspired iteration. First, add some volume powder to your roots (Rox prefers products by Swedish company Sachajuan) and pull your hair back into a low ponytail. Separate the hair above the rubber band into two sections, making sure there is a slight gap at the top of the rubber band. Then take the hair in the ponytail and twist as you turn it up and pull it through the open space. Stop before pulling the bottom completely through and secure the style and any loose hairs with bobby pins.
Products: Volume Powder, $32, and Medium Hold Hairspray, $28, both by Sachajuan, available at Oxenrose, 448 Grove Street (between Gough and Octavia streets); 415-252-9723.
Heidi’s Free-Falling Fishtail—To master this casual fishtail plait, start by pulling your hair over and around to one side. Let some strands fall around your face and split the remaining hair into two sections. Take quarter-inch-width groups of hair from the back of each section, cross it over the front, and tuck it behind the opposite section. Continue to cross over, switching from left to right, until you are at the end of the braid. Hint: Grabbing larger pieces of hair, mixed with little pieces here and there will give it that messy, textured look. Once you get to the bottom use a little rubber band and wrap the hair around it as you go down, giving it a zig-zag appearance (see picture). Finish with a spray of leave-in conditioner on the ends and a quick spray of Ocean Mist all over.
Products: Leave-in Conditioner, $28, and Ocean Mist, $28, both by Sachajuan, available at Oxenrose, 448 Grove Street (between Gough and Octavia streets); 415-252-9723.
Erin’s Fauxmbre Tips—Commitment-phobes (and blondes), listen up! There’s a simpler way to get of-the-moment Kool-Aid-colored tips without reaching for the Manic Panic. Just grab your favorite blush—the brighter the better—then place the ends of your hair against your palm and apply the blush with a makeup brush. Note that if the blush (or eye shadow) is all broken up, there will be more powder to rub into your hair. Try doing it in sections to create the coveted ombre-effect, then accentuate the color and the punk-ish style by grabbing pieces of hair and securing with bobby pins into a half-up style. Add a spritz of hairspray and you’re ready to roll!
Products: Bella Bamba Blush by Benefit, $28, available at Sephora, 33 Powell Street (at Market Street); 415-362-9360; Medium Hold Hairspray by Sachajuan, $28, available at Oxenrose, 448 Grove Street (between Gough and Octavia streets); 415-252-9723.
Ashley’s Refreshed Curls—Naturally curly haired ladies can tame their waves while still retaining a sexy tousled look with this quick five minute refresh plan. Start by prepping your mane with a shine spray. Then grab sections of your hair in varying sizes—the larger the section, the looser the curl—and wrap the hair all the way around a curling wand or iron (preferably a clip-less version). Make sure you’re holding the end of the hair out and keeping the thicker part of the wand toward the top of your head. If you’re in a big rush, focus on the top layers and those sections framing your face and finish it all off with a light coat of hairspray.
Products: Shine Spray, $30, and Medium Hold Hairspray, $28, both by Sachajuan, available at Oxenrose, 448 Grove Street (between Gough and Octavia streets); 415-252-9723; Infiniti Curling Wand Styler by Conair, $44.99, available at Conair.com.
