This Is Our Jam Premieres: Fort Lean, “Envious”

Brooklyn five-piece Fort Lean makes guitar-driven power pop with the mentality that big riffs and huge choruses hold the keys to rock-'n'-roll greatness. So, when the band told us that "Envious" is about celebrating a classic rock-star lifestyle — or, at least, the myth of one — it made perfect sense:

"Part of what's great about playing rock music is that you get to acknowledge the history of larger-than-life personalities that have come before. There's a real canon of braggadocio and swagger that's existed for a long time, and we wanted to write a song that engaged with that history...but more than anything it's really just a soundtrack for being rowdy and misbehaving with your friends, perhaps at the expense of decorum and good taste."

The song itself rings with an anything-goes exuberance, and lead singer Keenan Mitchell's ramshackle yowl and the band's surf-rock jangle could fit nicely in just about any decade of rock's history. A large part of entering the rock god pantheon is writing your own mythology. Fort Lean seems like it has that part covered.
