Japan Fashion Week In New York Delivers a Colorful Shot of Tokyo's Best

Last night, Japan Fashion Week flew into town, carrying with it 13 of Tokyo's finest designers. The runway show at the Altman Building proved to be colorful, cleverly conceptual, with just the occasional dud or two thrown in. High on our favorites list was the Stephen Sprouse-y one-piece and jacket ensemble from ato and the whole G.V.G.V collection, including a pair of high-waisted pants with exaggerated zippers that screamed Ben Cho, and a neon day-glo dress, which—though too crazy for us to wear out—set the tone for the rest of the night. Satoru Tanaka's looks for men, meanwhile, hit the more subdued side—in a good way, that is—with pristine tailoring and a simple, minimalist aesthetic.
If you couldn't make it last night, fear not: Starting today through Sunday, select looks from the designers will be on display at destination N.Y., Theory, Issey Miyake in Tribeca, and Aloha Rag. The best part? G.V.G.V and Tiny Dinosaur (cool utilitarian green jumpsuits for men, funky frocks for women)'s goods are on sale now at Opening Ceremony. Run fast, very fast.
