What do you think about when you dance?
"It depends on what I'm performing. Sometimes I think about anatomical and technical precision — like where exactly every movement comes from, where precisely I should step, what exactly has to happen to make a movement work. Once that begins to feel solid or isn't enough to fill the choreography I think about the quality of movement. Like how will I raise my arm this time to make this movement as spectacular as it can be? Or maybe I need to become something or someone else. I play a lot of make-believe."

Of course there's some sort of X-factor, but do you think dance talent can be taught, too?
"This really depends on what kind of dancer or dance talent you are looking for. Of course technical prowess is important and for that you just have to work your ass off.  Some dancers have it easier than others — they are born more flexible, with more turn out or beautiful feet. What I think makes a great dancer or performer is their complexity or the way they perform.  I think the most intriguing performers have had to fight for something in their life. If life or dancing has always been easy, you can see it when they dance. I like to see a person rich with experience.  So in that sense, talent can't really be taught. They dancer has to live it and create it and bring it to what they are doing."
