My Style: It Jeweler Sara Beltran's Beachy-Chic Chelsea Crib

UPDATE: With the beachy weather all around us this week and weekend, we're thinking about Dezso's chic ocean-inspired jewelry. Check out the designer's pad and see why we're still obsessing. This article was originally published February 3, 2012.
When you hear "beachy chic," your mind probably drifts westward to some Pacific bungalow where sun-kissed girls hang ten and sip drinks out of coconuts. But that's only because you've never met local jewelry designer Sara Beltran, the creative genius behind Dezso (or "desire" in Latin). Desire indeed. The line (an instant obsession of glossy editors and Barneys' buyers) consists of simple, well-made bracelets, necklaces, and earrings that channel her love of the ocean, her Mexican upbringing, and Jaipur, India, where she just opened up a design studio. In a time when jewelry can feel limited to large impact pieces, Beltran's spare collection stands out, an aesthetic that translates to her home life as well. We visited her Chelsea casa and discovered a total oasis of calm away from the overzealous galleristas below — rustic and earthy, clean and subtly sophisticated, this crib is one chic getaway. Of course, we didn't leave without some snaps of Beltran's personal style, too. You can bet her ensembles are as cleverly understated as her line, even though she rocks a Birkin on the reg. We just hope it doesn't get sandy.

This book is called India, Mexico: Vientos Parelelos, which means 'parallel winds.' Sara loves it because it’s so similar to her life story, as she was born in Mexico and then lived in India. She now divides her time between India and New York.

If you didn't design jewelry, what would you be doing?
"Designing jewelry is my dream job, but if I wasn’t designing Dezso by Sara Beltran, I’d want to be a mermaid. Realistically, I’d probably still be styling, which is what I was doing before I started my jewelry collection."

Do you have jewelry you just don't take off?
"Yes, I always wear several Dezso pieces, such as my polki diamond necklace, the shark teeth Mexican tassel necklace, and a chain made from polki diamond beads. I always wear these three necklaces, along with several bracelets and rings all the time. One bracelet I wear all the time has obsidian stones and was given to me by my shaman to wear for protection."

Who are some people you admire for their personal style?
"Maria Felix, also known as La Doña, who was considered the most famous Mexican actress of all time. By staying true to herself and her personal style she broke the traditional boundaries placed on Latin American women and created the tough, strong female image the world knew her for."

What are some future plans/projects coming up?
"I started venturing into furniture design by creating a few pieces for myself, but I just sold my first chair in Japan, which is really exciting. Another fun project I'm working on is with my friend Alexa Rodulfo, who is developing a fragrance based on my tastes for a candle line I plan to launch soon.""
