The Next Wave Of Lip Injections Is Here — & It’s Kind Of Insane

After Kylie Jenner announced that her full pout is actually the result of temporary lip injections and not lipliner (and definitely not a shot glass), there's been a lot of buzz around the procedure. But this newest trend really takes it to the next level. We're talking "Cinderella Lips." As Glamour reports, women across the pond have been asking their doctors to inject their liplines with saline for a temporary plumping effect. Harley Street Skin Clinic in London describes the treatment, stating on its site: "If you are toying with the idea of lip fillers and want to see what you would look like with a fuller pout, try the Cinderella Lips treatment, which is an injection of saline into the lipline that disappears, Cinderella-style...after just 24 to 48 hours." The clinic goes on to add that it's a great treatment for a big night out, noting that its celebrity clients get it done before red carpet events. "There's not much of a safety concern with injecting saline into the body, as it's eliminated from the system rather easily," Julia Tzu, MD, of Wall Street Dermatology, tells Glamour. If you're thinking about getting the procedure done, just keep in mind that the after-effect of bruising is possible. Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, cautions that if you're going for the same look as injectable fillers, you're not necessarily going to find it with the saline treatment. "Lips filled with saline would be firm and heavy," he says. "They would look as if you were stung by a bee." He adds that you should be careful about how much saline your doctor injects, because "overfilling with saline can lead to skin stretching, resulting in inflammation and irritation." Dr. Tzu notes that this isn't necessarily a new concept. In fact, doctors injected Goldie Hawn's lips with saline solution for her role in the 1996 flick The First Wives Club (according to IMDB, Hawn said it discouraged her from going through with a longer-lasting collagen treatment). So, while this may be a great way to see whether lip injections are right for you, keep in mind that — as with any procedure — you should do your research beforehand and make sure to visit an authorized medical professional to get it done.
