Watch Chicago's Best Salons Go Head To Head On This Wild Runway

hair-wars-main Not all hair salons are created equal, and this Sunday's Hair Wars competition is determined to weed out the best from the rest. Ten top-notch Chicagoland salons will attempt to prove their prowess in a runway show for our entertainment the title of Supreme Salon, and a trip to the Hair Wars finals in Las Vegas. If you're as much of a Bravo junkie as we are, you'll be psyched to hear that Shear Genius finalist Ben Mollin will play host for the evening, alongside judge Eli Mancha, who was named 2011 Stylist of the Year by the North American Hairstylist Awards.

Each competing salon will create its own theme for the catwalk, and if last year's show was any indication, the hairstyles will be anything but tame — think towering beehives, dangerous spikes, and all kinds of props. Fashion photog Alex Goykhman will be on hand to shoot the looks, and lucky members of the audience will get their own chance to pose for the camera. RSVP to 312-265-3990, and start plotting your manic mane now — you'll want to go crazier than your everyday ballet bun for this one.

When: Sunday, April 22, doors open at 9 p.m., runway show at 11 p.m.
Where: MID Nightclub, 306 North Halsted (at West Fulton Street); 312-265-3990.

How Easy Is This DIY Twisted Updo?!

Hair style tutorial videos are part of our beauty bread and butter these days. We love seeing once-complicated styles broken down into step-by-step explanations that we can easily replicate at home. Here's one you may not have tried, and this one goes out to our medium-length hair ladies. Flavia, of Lulu Abroad, shows us how to create a simple, chic, twisted updo. There's no help from a stylist there—Flavia does it all herself and breaks it down into shockingly simple steps. Any hairstyle that looks more complicated than it actually is totally works for us, especially when the style is so friendly to our fierce Chicago wind. Don't be shocked if you master this style in a flash, and start adding it to your hairstyle mainstays. Watch and learn ladies, watch and learn. (Lulu Abroad)

Video: How To DIY A Brigitte Bardot Blowout!

Anyone looking to put a little more "babe" in their weekend beauty routine should watch the video below. Sine Qua Non, the local salon chain rapidly winning us over with their hair tutorials, just shared a video on how to achieve a Brigitte Bardot-inspired blowout. This is a mega-volume 'do that doesn't tread into dangerous "Is she wearing a bump it?" territory. There is teasing involved (calm down) and some serious hair product, so give yourself a little extra time to prep for your night out if you try this. Trying something new is worth the extra effort, non? (Sine Qua Non)

Hair-Braiding State Laws Get A New Twist (They Exist! Who Knew?)

hairThink braiding hair is a no-brainer? Turns out, professional hair-braiders have to deal with a variety of issues outside of nimble fingers, including health tests, allergy prevention, and ways to deal with differences in texture and tension. On top of all that? They had to make sure they had 1,500 hours (that's 62 straight days of braiding!) of training by law just to qualify for their trade. "If you braided hair professionally and didn't have a cosmetology license, you were operating outside the law," says seasoned braider Frances Simmons, who lobbied for more realistic license rules for a craft that many learned growing up. "We just wanted to find a common-sense balance between getting the proper training and spending so much time and money on what you didn't need." Now, the estimated 25,000 professions are getting the right kind of education and experience for a new kind of new license, including 300 practice hours and a standardized curriculum featuring topics like repetitive-motion therapy, tension-management, and craftsmanship. Shout out to these braiders for rocking their craft while harbored with extra responsibility. We'll be experimenting under their capable hands, for sure. (Chicago Tribune)

Unicorn Hair: Would You Try It?

We're either throwing this out there because A.) we generally want to know what you think, or B.) we want you to be our hair Guinea pigs and try it first. Probably both. One of our favorite local style blogs recently spotted Unicorn Hair (blonde hair with ends dyed hot pink) on musician Caitlin Kerr of Chicago band Summer Girlfriends. If you're going for a change-up this fall, this mythical dip in the pink pool might be a winner. What may at first seem like an easy-enough DIY is actually totally profesh handiwork you'd have to seek out a a salon if you're gonna do it right. Are your locks ready? Or is this a style best left to someone more (dare we say it) brave? (ScoutandLo)

3 Local Style Bloggers With Hair We Want!

In recent strolls around the blogosphere, we noticed something pretty amazing: Chicago style bloggers have gorgeous hair! How we've overlooked such a phenomenon is beyond us, so allow us to apologize profusely. These three local mavens spend most of their waking hours seeking out fresh, stunning, bet-you-didn't-know-about-this style, and then release it onto the Internet for all to see. Thankfully, they include photos of themselves, too, or else we might be missing out on some awe-inspiring manes. Click through for a peek at the locks we love, and see if you can re-create these styles for yourself. We're left inspired, motivated, and admittedly jealous. What about you?
