With prom season here, we decided to see just how
normal extraordinary some of the brightest stars (and one stylish veteran who remembers her dress all too well) dealt — or didn't — with that fated night. Stars, they really are just like us!
Spoiler alert: These anecdotes are pretty much familiar to anyone, with the so-so date, the limo drama, bad dancing, and a dress no one (no one) likes in retrospect. Though, of course, most of theirs were designer.
"I went to prom once. I got a really bad spray tan and wore a navy silk dress. I never went to high school, and one of my first boyfriends asked me to go, so I was really excited and mortified. I wish I had a picture of it (he has it). It's probably hilarious."

Did you go to prom at all?
"No, I never went to single school dance in my life."
"It just wasn't my thing. I was a skater with a shaved head. It just didn't appeal to me, even in the slightest."
Do you ever look back on that and wish you had shown up with ripped tights or something?
"No. I know it's weird, but there's things that just don't appeal to me at all."

Did you go to prom?
"I did go to prom, but I went to a very weird artsy high school in L.A. and prom wasn't a very big thing."
Can you tell us a story about it? Was it funny or weird?
"I have, like, no exciting stories from prom."
What did you wear?
"One year I wore a vintage dress and another year I wore a dress by Jenni Kayne."

"I went to six. I have to be honest — I didn’t have very much fun at any of them. I went to one with this guy who is now an actor, he was like Jake Ryan from Sixteen Candles and I just stood there staring at him all night. I don’t know — they were all so different. I kind of blocked them out. It’s one of those things where there's a lot of hype around something and you end up not having that great of a time."

What's prom like in England?
"It wasn't the same deal. It wasn't the whole school like it is in America, but it was just the last two years of high school."
Yeah, it's like the seniors.
"It was fun. It was such a funny thing, like if you were going to be asked to prom and 'Who's going with who?' And, like, 'I thought he was gay, but he's taking me, so he's not.' My friend Milly and I used to go get our dresses at Portobello Market. They used to have great vintage stores, and we'd find really fun things. I swear I wore this dress that was — you know Never Been Kissed, that Drew Barrymore movie? -- I feel like I had a version of that dress, the pink one. I love a good party dress."
That's a party dress!
"That was a 'game over' party dress."

Did you go to prom ever?
"I did go to prom. I have an amazing prom story."
"I went to prom with my best male friend. He's my oldest friend — we've known each other since we were two; we're still friends. So, legitimate friend — not like a weird we're-just-going-to-prom-because-we-have-to-go-to-prom-with-someone friend. I wore an electric-blue mini-dress and he wore a red-velvet smoking jacket. I had the wrong haircut that was not very pretty. We were going in this limo, and my school did this thing where they did a scavenger hunt for prom. You had to take your limos in a big group and find the prom location by picking up these clues and solving them, etc. So like halfway through this prom hunt, our limo breaks down on the 405. We manage to push it off the freeway into this gas station. We're standing there waiting and my other childhood best friend drives by, spots the limo, sees my date in his jacket and thinks, 'Oh, that has to be Max. That must be Max and Zoe — why are they there?' He pulls off the freeway and drives us to prom in her beat-up Volvo station wagon."
She wasn't going to prom?!
"She went to a different high school."
So she saved prom!
"She saved prom. Isn't that amazing?"
Actually, technically, the smoking jacket saved prom.
"Oh my god, the smoking jacket definitely saved prom. And, after prom we went back to someone's house and watched the Tim Burton Batman movies. We were so nerdy, it was terrible."
High school was the worst.
"Yeah, yeah terrible."

Do you remember what you wore to your prom?
"Probably a very hideous dress. I'm from Chicago. I think it was a very big skirt, pink and white dress"
