You've probably heard the phrase, "Dress for the job you want, not the job you have." Well, the same goes for beauty. Why have an assistant's arsenal when you can start working on that boss-lady face instead? To help you look like you've climbed the ladder overnight, we tapped Violet Grey founder and CEO Cassandra Huysentruyt Grey to share her favorite beauty power-products.
One of the industry's most knowledgeable head honchos, Grey launched the Violet Grey empire to much media fanfare last year. The company includes an online magazine featuring shoots with everyone from Lauren Hutton to Eva Mendes, an e-commerce shop, and a brick-and-mortar store on Melrose Place in Los Angeles. Despite her accomplishments, however, Grey remains humble. "I wouldn't say I'm successful yet," she told us. "I will be successful when Violet Grey reaches immortality and is commonly described as the best place to work in the world. I know we will make it, but not without a lot more blood, sweat, and tears."

Grey also shared some words of wisdom for anyone hoping to follow her path of entrepreneurship. "If you want to start a company, you are going to need three things to sit at the table: Tenacity, a vision that makes people want to work with you, and patience," she says. But, getting a company up and running is only half the battle. What does it take to make it big? "If you want a chance at success, you are going to need three more things: A world-class team, funding, and good luck."
And, the perfect office-ready perfume certainly won't hurt, either. Grey was kind enough to share the working-girl essentials she relies on to run the show at Violet Grey. With her 11 expert picks — spanning everything from smudge-free mascara to desk must-haves — you'll be sure to look polished in the midst of anything the workplace throws your way.

The best product to make your hair look coiffed before a meeting:
"Not only does Oribe's Shine Light Reflecting Spray provide the right amount of hold to combat any stray fly-aways, but it gives your hair that fresh-from-the-salon halo of shine."

The best lipstick for a job interview:
"If you are interviewing for a beauty company, lipstick is important and says a lot about a person. I would recommend the Guerlain Rouge G Lipstick, because its bullet includes a tiny compact mirror, which will surely make your future boss believe you are always prepared."

The beauty product for when you need a confidence boost:
"A highlighter and contouring cream. Fact: Highlighted cheekbones win most arguments."

The boss-lady nail polish:
"I rely on the professional opinion of Karen Gutierrez, a nail artist we regularly collaborate with on set for Violet Grey photo shoots. This is her recommendation: 'Unlike a bright red that draws attention, this color's deep tone gives off the essence that the woman wearing it is in complete control.'"

The drugstore cheap-thrill skincare item that's available in case of emergency:
"Pati Dubroff introduced me to Jergens' BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream. It’s the best last-minute fix when you need to add a touch of color to your legs for the red carpet."

The drugstore cheap-thrill hair product that's available in case of emergency:
"I don't wear contacts, but I'll buy lots of contact cases and fill them with little dollops of hair product (usually Leonor Greyl’s Protective Styling Cream). I keep these in my desk drawer and my makeup bag for hair smoothing emergencies without needing to carry around a whole bottle."

The cosmetics case that looks (and means) business:
"I collect vintage train cases. I'm afraid to tell you where I find them for fear that you may outbid me!"

The no-smudge mascara that never needs a mid-day mirror check:
"I don’t wear mascara, but one of my favorite makeup artists, Dotti, says Serge Luten’s Cils Cellophane is 'the best in the world.' I don’t know about you, but I would go with the best in the world. The unique clear formula uses tiny, black microfibers to amp up and define lashes instead of an inky tint, hence its ability to remain smudge-free."

The secret to looking wide-awake all day:
"I apply eyelash extensions religiously once a week with Daniel [of Longmi Lashes], the eyelash king. Because of this, I don't need any mascara."

The fragrance to wear to work:
"My new friend Alexander Vreeland just launched a line of fragrances inspired by the allure of his grandmother, Diana Vreeland. I am obsessed with the Extravagance Russe Eau de Parfum. It smells just like The Ritz in Paris. I have been wearing it to work and secretly spraying the light bulbs so our office smells extravagant — and, therefore makes my team feel regal."
