A quote that's always stuck with me when getting ready is one from Coco Chanel: “Before leaving the house, a lady should stop, look in the mirror, and remove one piece of jewelry.” The takeaway is to keep it simple — especially when it comes to packing.
Whether you're escaping the city heat to the Hamptons or indulging in your wino ways in Napa, 'tis the season for a weekend getaway and that means one thing: Learning how to pack the perfect carry-on.
To keep my packing on point, I'm stuffing this little guy with just the essentials — which to me means lipstick and dresses. See the two perfect-for-summer outfits I've got planned with the makeup to match. A dress is only as good as the lipstick that goes with it, am I right?
ASOS Maxi Dress With Stepped Hem, $93.34, available at ASOS; Zara Top With Sheer Stripe, $59.90, available at Zara; J.Crew Panama Hat in Natural, $58, available at J.Crew; Revlon Super Lustrous™ Lipstick in Nude Attitude, $6.99, available at Ulta; Swiss Army Spectra Global Carry-On, $299.99, available at Swiss Army.
It’s the perfect time of year to pull out my whites. No matter where I am headed for a weekend getaway, I always need an option to go from day to night. The one time I don’t pack anything dressy is the time something epic happens and I have NOTHING to wear. Insert the cutest skort there ever was. It's business in the front, party in the back, and perfect for running around. Then throw on a light, breezy white blouse to go with it.
Rocking a monochromatic white look makes you look instantly put-together. But since the outfit is void of color, makeup is key. I like to give my lips a punchy, bright color. I have a bit of a lip color obsession, so l take every opportunity to swipe on something bold. For an all-white ensemble, I'm going for a red orange lip, using Revlon Super Lustrous™ Lipstick in Fire & Ice. You can layer it on for really pigmented color or keep it light for just a hint of tint.
Then I keep my eye makeup mellow with a light swipe of bronze shadow (like Revlon PhotoReady™ Primer, Shadow + Sparkle in Metropolitan) and apply a few layers of my favorite volumizing mascara.
Going somewhere tropical or just want to BE tropical? It’s all about bright colors, so pick the hottest hue you can find and rock out with your bold self. This ASOS dress is great because I can just roll it up in my suitcase. And the high-low hemline is fun and flirty for that sunset cocktail date with the mysterious man in the pale blue silk blouse at the Tiki bar. Girl can dream, right?
I also never go to a sunny destination without a hat. It blocks out the sun and covers up a questionable hair day so that you can spend less time getting ready and more time on the beach with your feet in the sand.
For a punchy eye to go with that killer dress, I love a good compact so that I don’t have to pack separate colors, like Revlon PhotoReady™ Primer, Shadow + Sparkle in Bohemian. I usually tend to gravitate towards the neutral shadows, but this minty turquoise is a great way to inject another color to your look.
To finish my makeup, I picked a light neutral gloss in a nude peachy tone to give my lips some shine without competing with my eyes. Try Revlon Super Lustrous™ Lipstick in Honey Bare.
When you're packing for your next weekend getaway, take a little time to plan your looks ahead so that you can work on your tan instead of figuring out what to wear to dinner. And for your makeup, always pack compacts so that you can mix and match with your looks while saving some room in your carryon. Like Chanel says, less is more.
