After nearly 13 years in New York, wearing black and white has become somewhat of a city uniform — never underestimate the power of a great crisp white blouse, black fitted blazer, and a pair of skinnies. But, with my recent cross-country move to Lala Land, I'm surrounded by bright blue skies, luscious green palms, and Angelenos wearing colorful getups all year round.
So, I adapted and started tempering some color into my wardrobe. For my fellow New Yorkers who are clinging to their neutrals, I've come up with three outfits that infuse West Coast color with N.Y. style, ahead.
Rebecca Minkoff Quinn Bucket Bag, $375, available at Rebecca Minkoff; ASOS Cropped Blazer in Ponte With Notch Detail, $59.40, available at ASOS; Club Monaco Annie Pants, $139.50, available at ShopBop; Elizabeth and James Carroll Sunglasses, $265, available at Saks Fifth Avenue; Zara Vamp Shoe With Ankle Straps, $39.99, available at Zara; Topshop Overlay V Section Bracelet, $10, available at Topshop; Revlon ColorBurst™ Lip Butter in Candy Apple, $7.49, available at Revlon.
Wearing color from head to toe isn't easy for everyone, which is why I like to play with a punchy lip. My lipstick addiction runs deep, and the last time I went out shopping, I didn’t come home with one lipstick but five. I can’t make this stuff up, people. A great bold lip can be a risk-free way to experiment with color. Since monochromatic white is hot for summer, I paired a structured crop top with a tailored skirt. Then I topped it off with Revlon ColorBurst™ Lip Butter in Tutti Frutti. This orangey hue instantly adds life to the white basics. What I love about these Lip Butters is that you can wear them sheer or apply more layers for a stronger pigment.
Zara Studio Cropped Sleeveless Top, $39.99, Zara Sheath Skirt, $49.99, both available at Zara; Steve Madden REALOVE Sandals, $79.95, available at Steve Madden; BaubleBar cuff, $38, available at BaubleBar; Choices Oblong Shape Transparent Acrylic Hard Box Bag, $47.99, available at Choices; Revlon ColorBurst™ Lip Butter in Tutti Frutti, $7.49, available at Revlon.
Nothing looks fresher than mint. My most recent purchase is this minty green Equipment blouse. The great thing about this color is that it's still considered a neutral! I know I sound crazy, but it's true. Light pastel colors are easy to mix with other basics, so for someone who's got a death clutch on their black skinnies (like I once did), a fresh green top could be a great stepping stone.
But if you're ready, you can choose to go mono mint with pants in the same hue. Choose sandals in the same color palette, then to finish off the look, I like to stack on a wrist full of gold bangles and add a swipe of Revlon ColorBurst™ Lip Butter in Cotton Candy for a girly pink pout, which complements the mint perfectly.
Equipment Brett Blouse in Ice Green, $198, available at Equipment; Joie A La Plage Sable Slides, $115, available at ShopBop; J Brand 811 Mid-Rise Skinny Leg, $176, available at J Brand; Topshop Spike Chain Bracelets, $20 each, available at Topshop; Revlon ColorBurst™ Lip Butter in Cotton Candy, $7.49, available at Revlon.
I have always been a huge fan of orangey red, so this red blazer was meant for me. I love the crisp cut paired with slouchy, cobalt blue pants. It's a perfect day-to-night ensemble too. All you have to do is switch your daytime sneaks for some heels. To match the blazer, go for a red lip using Revlon ColorBurst™ Lip Butter in Candy Apple. Though it looks like a strong color, it's much more wearable than a lipstick thanks to the Lip Butter's sheer application.
