With the insane number of beauty products on the market now, can you imagine how hard it must be to get a new indie line off the ground? That’s why I have to give props to L.A.-based entrepreneur Nyakio Kamoche Grieco, who just launched Nyakio, a high-end skin care collection that draws upon her Kenyan heritage.
It all started when she began researching the beauty world and discovered that there were no products that represented African culture. Boom! A genius idea was born. Fast-forward 10 years and her collection, which includes a face scrub, a body exfoliator, and a moisturizing oil, is finally here.
All three of the products work wonders, but I’m especially into the Kenyan Coffee Body Scrub. It’s inspired by a beauty ritual that Grieco’s grandmother used to do. “[My grandmother] worked on our family’s sustainable coffee farm, and after spending the day outdoors under the sun, she would boil down coffee beans with honey and apply the grounds to her skin with a sugarcane rod," says Grieco.
The luxe exfoliator is made with pampering ingredients like shea butter, avocado oil, and Mongono nut oil in addition to coffee and sugar. The color is rich and dark, like a cup of espresso, and I love to take a deep whiff of the stuff before I apply it because the scent is so delicious. I’ve been ignoring the directions and massaging it onto my dry skin before I hop into the shower. When I rinse it off, I’m as soft as a baby and mini-skirt ready.
