#ThrowbackThursday: 3 Ways To Wear '90s Beauty Looks Right Now

Nothing against the typical retro hair and makeup looks that come back season after season, but I’ve been bored to tears with the same old Veronica Lake waves and old Hollywood red lips for a while now. That’s why I’m excited that the '90s, an era that’s grossly underappreciated when it comes to beauty, is finally having a moment. Don’t worry — the revival won’t require you to go through half-a-can of Aqua Net a day. And fake moles are completely optional. Just take the best ideas of the decade and give them a modern twist, as spotted on the Fall '13 runways, ahead.

The Look: Dark lips and bold eyebrows
The rapper Foxy Brown and Brenda Walsh from Beverly Hills 90210 both wore dark lips and bold brows well, but I like to associate this intense combo with the characters from Mi Vida Loca, the 1994 film about a group of tough Latinas in the Echo Park neighborhood of L.A. The girls paired the daring look with high, teased bangs and defined eyes, but for a softer take, skip the eyeliner and leave your hair fuss-free. For full, yet natural-looking brows, apply a brow powder with a small angled brush. And for your lips, go with a matte shade that’s more berry than brown — it'll flatter all skin tones.

The Look: Heavy eyeliner and messy hair
To channel the I-don’t-give-an-eff vibe that's mastered by the flannel-wearing grunge girls of the '90s, it’s all about being perfectly imperfect. Flip the eyeliner script and trace a jet-black pencil just along your lower lashline. Feeling really rebellious? Gently smudge it with your finger. Balance out the heavy eyeliner with nude gloss and clean skin. To give your hair a slept-in effect, scrunch it with a texture-boosting mousse or braid damp hair before bed, then undo the twists in the a.m.

Oribe Surfcomber Tousled Texture Mousse, $37, available at Oribe. Becca Matte Skin Shine Proof Foundation, $42, available at Becca. Giorgio Armani Flash Lacquer Crystal Shine Gloss, $29, available at Giorgio Armani. Sephora Waterproof Contour Eye Pencil in Black Lace, $9, available at Sephora.

The Look: Barely-there makeup and sleek strands
For those that wouldn’t be caught dead in Doc Martens then or now, try an understated '90s look that takes its cue from those happy, sunny Tommy Girl fragrance ads circa 1996 or Cher from Clueless. Think glowing skin, neutral eyes, and nearly naked lips. When worn with a smooth blowout, it’s effortless, but like, so chic.
