You Asked, We Answered: How To Tackle Greasy Hair

Web01
The frustrating part about having oily hair is that you feel compelled to wash it constantly, which as we all know, leads to an overstimulation of oil that forces you to suds up even more. It's a vicious cycle, I tell you!

Yiyi in New York has this exact problem: "All the shampoos out there are for dry or normal hair types, but not all girls fall into those neat little categories — like me. My bangs get greasy easily and lose their volume within several hours — help!"
Yiyi, I totally get it. Not only do you need to find the right shampoo that draws out impurities and removes excess buildup but also adopt my easy-peasy technique that will pump up the volume in a major way. See my three easy-to-follow tips that I promise will solve your hair dilemma, and get your mane looking and feeling amazing just in time for summer.

The Shampoo
Hair, like skin, gets used to products, so remember to alternate shampoos and always rinse thoroughly. Use a shampoo that removes dirt without stripping the natural, good-for-you oils. I love Shu Uemura New Cleaning Oil Shampoo or Kerastase Bain Volumactive. Once you find two that you like, rotate between them. Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo also works wonders, so I use this baby once a week to remove any product residue.
These days, I am really in to using green products and was just introduced to Rahua Voluminous Shampoo. First of all, it’s gluten-free — I didn't even know hair care could be GF (!) — and it's 100% organic.

The Technique
After shampooing, apply conditioner only on the ends. And if you really want some volume, try using your conditioner every other shower. Then, towel-dry your hair and spritz your bangs with a thickening spray, like Bumble and bumble Surf Spray. Next, using a round brush, blow-dry your bangs first to the right, then to the left. This will help create volume and prevent your bangs from falling flat.
To hold the volume, you can top it off with a tiny spritz of flexible hairspray. You can defer to the cult classic, L'Oréal Elnett, or try Rahua Voluminous Spray, which is 100% natural, USDA organic, and alcohol-free. If your bangs start to droop, just add some dry shampoo and run your hairdryer on a low setting over the bangs again. Don't pull too hard when blow-drying, which will make your hair get oily faster.
Rahua Voluminous Spray, $28, available at Rahua; L'Oréal Elnett Satin Hairspray, $14.99, available at L’Oréal; Bumble and bumble Surf Spray, $25, available at Sephora; Mason Pearson Brush, $170, available at Bergdorf Goodman.

The Dry Shampoo
I would treat bangs the same as I would my roots and scalp, since they tend to get greasy at the same time. The best kind of dry shampoo to use in this case is the powder kind, not the aerosol. Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oak Milk – Non-Aerosol is divine. Spray a small amount of the powder in the roots of your bangs and work through. You can also check out Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, which increases volume and helps eliminate grease. The product comes out clear and smells amazing. I've also been loving TIGI Queen for a Day Thickening Spray, which gives MAJOR volume without the sticky, product residue.
