Elizabeth E. from Tulsa, Oklahoma asks, "I have green eyes and I am always wondering what eyeshadows are best for me. Should I match my shadow to my eye color or try something unexpected?” To answer Elizabeth's question — and find the best shades for all eye colors — I chatted with ArtWing makeup artist Sparrow. Read on to find your perfect eyeshadow match.
Keep blue peepers pretty with softer gray and pale blue hues. Even though it's taboo, I love blue on blue. Check out Tom Ford’s Eye Color Quad in Cobalt Rush or smudge some MAC High Def Cyan Eye Pencil for a more mod, matte blue. To open up your eyes, curl your lashes and add definition with two coats of black mascara. Diorshow is my favorite.
Dior Diorshow Mascara, $25, available at Sephora; MAC Chromagraphic Pencil, $19, available at MAC; Tom Ford Beauty Eye Color Quad in Cobalt Rush, $78, available at Bergdorf Goodman.
Shades of blue, coral, plum, and bronze dress up brown eyes, giving life to your face. Don’t be afraid of shimmer. Designating darker shades to the crease makes your eyes pop, looking bigger and brighter. Try using Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Smog all over and then line the inner waterline with Buxom Waterproof Smoky Eye Stick in Ice Pick to make your brown eyes appear lighter. It's a dream come true for all you makeup-hungry girls out there.
Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Smog, $18, available at Urban Decay; Bare Escentuals Buxom Waterproof Smoky Eye Stick, $19, available at Sephora.
Don’t be afraid to go for metal. You can handle the weight of a silver or copper-infused shimmer. A light wash of plums (such as Yves Saint Laurent Ombres 5 Lumieres in Midnight) or floral-inspired pinks are also great options that'll make you look fresh during the day. Adding a gunmetal powder such as NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Underworld to the crease and following up with a liquid cat-eye sails you into the evening.
Yves Saint Laurent Ombres 5 Lumières in Midnight, $58, available at Barneys; Dior Diorshow Mascara, $25, available at Sephora; NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Underworld, $34, available at Sephora.
For those of you with this gorgeous gift, spin the color wheel. On whichever color your finger lands, make a splash. Iridescent green, cool periwinkle, sheer gray — all of these colors will help your hazel pop. Applying Josie Maran Argan Color Stick in Coral high on the cheek balances and adds symmetry. Go for a light wash of plum sparkle with Kevin Aucoin Eyeshadow Duo in Palette 201. Prismasilk Eyeshadow in Casablanca is a soft gray cream shadow that can just as easily be used as an eyeshadow base or by itself for a breezy, smoky effect.
Josie Maran Argan Color Stick in Coral, $22, available at Sephora; Sunday Riley Prismasilk Eye Color in Casablanca, $26, available at Barneys New York; Kevyn Aucion Eye Shadow Duo Palette in 201, $42, available at Neiman Marcus.
If you have this rare eye color, you definitely want to show them off. Black, charcoal, deep grays and browns, or purple offset the gray. I like Lancome Color Design in Gris Fatale. White eyeliner on the inner corners brings the gray forward. Then generously apply mascara on both your top and bottom lashes, moving the wand horizontally from side to side. Finally, a strong brow pencil like Laura Mercier Brow Pencil in Soft Brunette brings the look together. Brush the brow hair straight up and out for fullness.
Lancôme Color Design in Gris Fatale, $49, available at Lancôme; Laura Mercier Eye Brow Pencil in Soft Brunette, $22, available at Nordstrom; Sephora Collection Nano Eyeliner in Pure White, $5, available at Sephora.
