'Tis The Season For Self-Pampering With This DIY Spa

While the holiday season can be quite magical — children behaving their best for Santa, kindness in the subways, Christmas carolers doing their thing — December can also be one of the more stressful times of the year. Between trying to figure out what to gift my oh-so-picky mom and dealing with the chaos of work during the holidays, I find myself strapped for time and a bit cash poor.

So, despite the fact that it's the season of giving, I always make sure to carve out some time to unwind and de-stress with some at-home pampering. So, go love thyself with this seriously luxe DIY spa session. Your skin, and wallet, will thank you.
Step 1: Soak
Pour yourself a hot bath, then add 1 cup of ground oatmeal. Soak for 20 minutes to soothe any muscle tension. Low on oats? For a detoxing and relaxing experience, try this recipe: ½ cup baking soda, ½ cup Epsom salt, 1 cup sea salt, and a few drops of your favorite scented oil. Candles are optional.
Step 2: Exfoliate
Mix ½ cup of fresh lemon juice and 1 tablespoon olive oil into a bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of organic honey and stir quickly until the ingredients blend together into a medium-thick consistency. Add 1/2 cup of granulated sugar and mix. You can play around with the proportions if you want a different consistency. Apply to your skin, paying extra close attention to the dry areas like the knees, feet, elbows, and hands. Rub in a circular motion for three to five minutes, then rinse.
Step 3: Moisturize
For your face, mix together 2 teaspoons fresh pumpkin if you can get it, 1 teaspoon papaya, 1 teaspoon honey, and 1 teaspoon raw sugar (this can be stored in the fridge for three to five days). Mix all of the ingredients together, then massage it into the skin using gentle, circular motions. Rinse with cool water. This mask helps to unclog pores and remove dead skin cells while locking in some much-needed moisture in the winter.
