Usually, album art doesn’t give much away about the artist’s music, but the Ryan McGinley-shot cover for Bat For Lashes’ new record The Haunted Man feels like an exception. “Laura,” the first single from Natasha Khan’s art-pop project is, like its cover, essentially naked. A slow burner that eschews the goth-y glam of past releases, “Laura” is an ode to someone in deep need of a confidence boost: "You’re more than a superstar,” Khan assures the titular character over nothing more than stark piano. It’s both a careful portrait, and a chance for Bat For Lashes to reemerge with nothing but the bare essentials.
