A Local Fashion Power Duo Shows Off Its 9-To-5 Style

[UPDATE: This story was originally published on September 18.]
The thought of 9-to-5 dressing often stirs up images of mellow, business-appropriate attire — blazers, pencil skirts, button-ups, etc. And while we get that with every gig comes a different set of sartorial requirements, we don’t think outfitting for work needs to be a total yawnfest.

So, we’ve tapped two ladies who know a thing about smart, on-the-job styling to prove this point. The Hayes Valley powerhouse duo of Catherine Chow and Corina Nurimba own not one, not two …but three of S.F.’s top shopping haunts and are beyond well-versed in stellar work style. We trailed them around their three boutiques (Azalea, Rand + Statler, and Welcome Stranger) to catch them in action and peep the cool and versatile wares they're sporting Monday through Friday. Peep their guide to totally working it, right here.

How do you stay fashionable and functional at the office?
Corina: "Dress functionally — balance comfort and style. You are going to be in that outfit for the whole day! I'm old-school, so no tank tops for me or super-short shorts!"

What’s one of your office style don’ts?

What’s a typical day look like, style wise?
Catherine: "Since I'm five months post-pregnancy, comfort is my priority. I love my oversized tees, J Brand chinos, leggings, elastic-waistband pants, and K.Jacque sandals."

Wowza! We’re digging the statement necklace in so many ways!

Tell us about your go-to Monday gear.
Corina: "I am getting into mixing prints lately! It totally works, especially if the pieces are in the same colors and shades. Plus, leopard print is classic, but I love very subtle monochromatic ones like these leggings I'm wearing."

What’s your philosophy when it comes to office dressing?
Catherine: "My office hours range from 7 a.m. to midnight. I love to wear all black, so it's easy for me to dress up or down. If I have to run into a meeting, I'll throw on a blazer and put on my red lipstick. If I'm working from home, I wear black leggings and a black Helmut Lang tee. This way, if I need to head over to the office, I can just throw over a leather jacket. My office fashion philosophy is to keep it simple and classic."

Corina, Wednesday

Tell us about what you’re rocking on Hump Day.
"I love this comfy, stretchy striped tunic that provides cover for my belly and hips. I’m five months pregnant! The crop-denim jacket is perfect in case it gets chilly, and I can roll up the sleeves to get working! Need I say more?"

Describe your personal sense of style.
"Casual luxe — as little effort as possible. I've had a chance to build a wardrobe for many years now, so theoretically, everything I pick out from my closet should be cute! I still love mixing high and low, but I'm a lot more efficient about that now."

Catherine, Thursday

Tell us why you chose this look for Thursday.
"By Thursdays I just want to be in my most comfortable office wear. These Girl by Band of Outsiders pants have an elastic waistband! So, basically I can eat all I want! This A.L.C. sweater is lightweight, but super warm. I love the color combo on The Orly Genger necklace. It brightens my day just wearing it."

What’s your secret for balancing work and life?
"There are four things to juggle in life — in which you can only afford to do three: a social life, family life, sleep, and work. Work is certain, so then as for the rest, I pick two others at a time."

A walk in the park ... literally. Corina takes a jaunt in Patricia’s Green.
