60 Seconds With Aubrey Plaza, Hilarious Star Of “The To Do List”

We all knew a Brandy Klark in high school. You know, that girl who never got one percentage short of 100, would rather beat her dad in jeopardy than go to a party with her friend, and likely has her sock drawer color-coordinated. In The To Do List — hitting theaters this Friday — Aubrey Plaza takes the cliche we love to hate and completely flips her on her head. The result? A hilarious comedy about a high school graduate who turns hooking up into nothing short of a pre-college homework assignment. Here, Plaza sat down with R29 and gets real on everything from dating bad boys to screaming at Rachel Bilson to her dream gig.

This movie has such a massive ensemble cast! Who was the biggest surprise to work with?
"It’s so hard to pick, everyone was really funny. I guess Rachel Bilson was really surprising to me, because I always respected her as an actress — I think she’s a beautiful and talented girl — but she ended up being totally funny in the movie and she was improvising left and right. I was kind of shocked! I didn’t know she was going to do that. Those scenes were really fun because we just got in this groove where we would just scream at each other. She was just saying hilarious shit all the time. Yeah, that really surprised me."

Do you feel weird about your family seeing this movie, considering the whole plot is about you hooking up with dudes?
"Yeah, absolutely! I’m terrified! I would prefer everyone I know to never see this movie. But, I don’t think that’s a reality."

Yeah, I'd imagine that one scene with you and McLovin' from Superbad may be a little awkward for your family.
"Wow. Yeah. I really dry-humped the shit out of him. I really did."

Did you date a lot in high school?
"I dated. I went to an all-girls private Catholic school, and we had a brother school. I also did a ton of community theater. I dated a guy from the community theater that was in a band. And, he was like a bad-boy boyfriend. Then I dated a football player from the brother school. I also dated a Swedish exchange student. I was all over the map."

Were you a good student?
"Yeah, I wasn’t a know-it-all, but I was an I-think-I-know-it-all. I was definitely an overachiever. I loved doing extracurricular activities and extra credit. I was pretty good at getting good grades. I was just really always involved. I was definitely a participator."

I feel like we're going to see you hosting Saturday Night Live any day now.
"Oh my god! Oh my god. That would be so exciting. That would honestly be one of the biggest deals to me, ever. It's my childhood dream to be on that show. Oh my god, I literally have butterflies right now. I feel like I’m going to throw up."
