The Hair Trick To Learn From The Supermodels

Photographed by Rockie Nolan.
When it comes to pulling off a "statement" haircut — the kind you get when you're a) breaking up with your S.O., b) starting a band, c) looking to be recognized as the next big thang (see: Jennifer Lawrence, Shailene Woodley, and Miley Cyrus), or d) just really, really over long hair — there are varying degrees of difficulty. A lob: easy, peasy. A pixie cut: daring. A messed-up asymmetric 'do: seriously advanced.
Long or short, there’s just something so devil-may-care about an asymmetric haircut. It’s instant edge.
Do you remember Cassie’s edgy shaved ’do — the one that launched a thousand side-parted undercuts and some faux versions? Ahem, Joan Smalls and Cara Delevingne circa the 2013 punk-themed Met Gala. Rihanna’s and Victoria Beckham’s asymmetric bobs from a few years back. Kristen Stewart (who’s essentially had the same hairstyle since she re-emerged from The Panic Room) is the latest celeb to hop on the trend. Her seriously askew shag is cool, unexpected, and destined to be copied.
Not ready to dive scissors first into an asymmetric cut? We hear you. Going full-on off-kilter requires bravery, not to mention extreme patience in the grow-out stage — a rare combo. So, take a cue from the supermodels, and fake it ‘til you make it with a strategically placed side-part. You can add a braid à la Cara to create a shaved effect. And, if you don’t like it, all you have to do is switch up your part the next day. Commitment-phobes rejoice!
