The Mafia today is well-known for strong-arming its opposition in Sergio Tacchini sweatsuits, but in the past they were a stylish bunch sporting crisp suits and, most famously, fastidious Fedora hats. The designers at ALIFE, inspired by the gangsters and hustlers of yore who made this handsome piece of headwear an American icon, have created Il Padrino, a Fedora "box set" that is the fruit of a collaboration between the downtown emporium, the British hat specialists at Kangol, and David Yurman jewelers. The hat itself is made of the finest quality felt and silk, but that only makes up part of the equation. The accessory pack, built directly into the box, has four gold hat-pins and three gold sheaths for three feathers—just in case you were worried that a black hat might not match everything in your wardrobe. What makes this box set a true heirloom that you and future generations can enjoy (you can consider the $1,400 price tag an investment) is the leather silk-lined box that houses the hat when it's not sitting atop your proud head. Only 10 of these will be released this year and 40 more in 2006, making the owners of Il Padrino members of the second most exclusive club in town.
ALIFE is located at 158 Rivington Street, 212-375-8128.
