This Makeup Hack Turns Any Lipstick Super-Matte

The lips we're seeing at the New York spring collections aren't glossy or stained. They're packed-on, powdered-down, and undeniably matte. In fact, we're calling them the "super-mattes" — and you're going to start seeing them everywhere.

At Jason Wu, Tanya Taylor, and Desigual, makeup artists employed one trick for getting the velvety look on lips: loose, colored powder. They swept it over stains and liquid lipsticks to turn the formulas into wildly matte, super-soft textures. Have you ever seen matte-orange lips this cool? Gordon Espinet, MAC senior vice president of makeup artistry, started by filling them in with bright-orange lip pencil. But the look didn't achieve "Williamsburg hipster" status (yes, that was the inspiration for the show) until he tapped neon-orange pigment over the entire lip.

Yadim, global makeup artist for Maybelline New York, achieved this unique red shade by sweeping on a mix of two liquid lipsticks, an orangey-red and a true blue-red (both from Maybelline's new Vivid Matte line, launching this spring). He overdrew the lips slightly, and then, right before the models hit the runway, he pressed dry, red powder pigment onto their lips with his fingers. "It ends up looking like velvet," says Yadim. He snagged the red pigment from Maybelline's factory (the same pigments the brand mixes into its lipsticks), but you can cheat the look with pure-red blush, he says.

This lip look started out as a simple, lavender stain. But when NARS makeup artist Uzo swept a cool, pastel-pink blush (NARS Blush in Impassioned, available this spring) over it with a kabuki brush, she bumped it up to super-matte status.
