With the first hint of a fall chill in the air, we're feeling the urge to make some updates to our closets
and our makeup bags. And while some things are difficult in transition, like finding the perfect autumnal, denim pencil skirt or tackling our September to-do list — we can take on the new season with small, subtle adjustments that'll make saying goodbye to the beach a little more bearable. A good place to start? Dipping your fingers into fall.
To pick the right polish, we chatted with three pro manicurists — Sally Hansen global color ambassador
Madeline Poole, nail artist and Smith & Cult ambassador Sarah Bland, and nail artist Miss Pop — to figure out what good things are in store for our manis in the near future. Turns out, traditional nude polishes are on their way out. Glitter is, thankfully, being replaced by much-easier-to-remove metallics. Brights are big. Want more? High Contrast "2017 is all about high-contrast and high-impact color," says Miss Pop. "And these shades are not gently blended. They're boldly swathed across the nail in bands, triangles, and other geometric shapes." So pull out your primaries — as well as other bright shades, like lime green and bright yellow — and go bold with your nails. Earth Tones According to Bland, black polishes are on their way out. "They had their run, but earth tones will reign supreme next year," she says. Poole agrees, pointing to transitional colors like neutrals, browns, and gray tones. Chanel Le Vernis in Garçonne, $28, available at Chanel.

Texture Play The easiest trend for 2017? Changing up your manicure's finish. "This will be popular because it's incredibly subtle, and creates textures that reflect beautifully off light," Bland says. We love it because you only need to add one bottle to your nail repertoire — either a matte or a high-shine topcoat. OPI Matte Top Coat, $10, available at Ulta Beauty.

Pretty Pastels After seasons and seasons of nudes, pastels are finally coming back into the fold, according to Poole. "It's a nice change of pace from barely-there shades," she says. Sure, pastels for spring aren't exactly groundbreaking. But they sure do make for a gorgeous manicure. Deborah Lippmann Nail Color in Blue Orchid, $18, available at Nordstrom.

Metallics & Chrome Skip your glitter in 2017. Metallic and chrome polishes are the big winners for textured lacquers — and all three of our experts agree. We especially love the shades that look like melted-down metals — golds, bronzes, and pewters are all cool options. Gucci Bold High-Gloss Lacquer in Metallic Sand, $29, available at Gucci.
