The beginning of summer means longer days and warmer weather, but it also involves seasonal fun that many of us wait all year for. Think: summer Fridays, rooftop happy hour, pool days, and weekends spent outdoors. Maybe even a beach-packed vacation, if we're lucky. However, we'd be remiss not to mention the fact that these activities expose our hair to the elements — and can lead to major dry out.
Now, that's no reason to hole up in the comfort of your air-conditioned home, away from the sun, wind, and surf. Caring for summer-parched hair — or preventing it in the first place — can be easy with the right products. Luckily, the pro-loved shampoos and conditioners ahead can act as a lifesavers for all kinds of textures. Now all you have to do is swap one in before the fun starts.
Good For: Any Hair Type "This is a thicker, more moisturizing shampoo," Derek Yuen, who works with Jessica Biel, says. "Not only will it cleanse and moisturize, but it protects against future exposure." That's because the shampoo contains kaempferia galanga root extract, an element that delivers UV protection. Oribe Signature Shampoo, $42, available at Oribe.
Good For: Colored Hair "This system has become my number one recommendation to all my clients for damaged hair," Brager reveals. "It's part protein with a ton of moisture and leaves the hair so shiny." Plus, it's made for colored hair! Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner, $28 and $30, available at Ulta.
Good For: Any Hair Type "This is a rich and luxurious deep conditioner," Bridget Brager, whose clients include Kate Bosworth, Sarah Paulson, Halston Sage, and Jenna Dewan Tatum says. "When your hair is dry, you need something to get deep down into the hair cuticle to quench the thirst. This is that product." Davines Nounou Hair Mask, $34, available at Birchbox.
Good For: Textured Hair "This co-wash cleanses and moisturizes the hair at once. It contains honey and guarana root which helps to build the hairs fibers and bring your hair back to health," hairstylist Stephanie McLemore notes. "The co-wash will provide moisture and will also strengthen your hair strands. It also helps to soothe tightness on the scalp and reduce product build-up. There are no sulfates, no silicones, and no parabens." Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Length Retention Melt In Softness Detangling Co-Wash, $6.98, available at Target.
Good For: Highlighted Hair While highlighted hair can use any formula on this list, this option also brightens sun-kissed strands. "My new favorite summer shampoo and conditioner is R+Co's Sunset Blvd," John Ruggiero, stylist to Michelle Monaghan and Ashley Graham, says. "They're purple to give summer blonds that extra brightness." R+Co Sunset Blvd Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner, $29 each, available at R+Co.
Good For: Any Hair Type "I found that this particular shampoo nourishes and hydrates the cuticle from the scalp to end," Cervando Maldonado, who works with Kirsten Dunst and Reese Witherspoon, notes. "It contains prickly pear seed oil, which is known for its regenerating antioxidant and repairing properties. And it leaves your hair smooth and shiny without weighing it down." Christophe Robin Regenerating Shampoo with Prickly Pear Oil, $40, available at Sephora.
Good For: Those With Breakage & Dandruff "With this product you will see benefits from first use, and then dramatically less breakage [with regular use]," hairstylist Sunnie Brook Jones, whose clients include Elisabeth Moss, Hailey Baldwin, and Claire Holt, says. [Edit note: She is a spokesperson for the brand.] Head & Shoulders Damage Rescue 2-in-1 Dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner, $16.99, available at Amazon.
Good For: Any Hair Type "I am obsessed with Iles Formula shampoo and conditioner," Kylee Heath, who works with Kristen Stewart and Lily Aldridge, says. "They leave my hair feeling soft, but not weighed down. When I use both, people always ask if I just colored my hair, because it looks so bright and shiny." Iles Formula 3 Step System, $99, available at Iles Formula.
Good For: Textured Hair "I love Carol's Daughter Almond Milk range," McLemore continues. "These products are specifically made for extremely damaged and over-processed hair. I love that you can use the leave-in as a lightweight daily shield against damage. The collection also has some key ingredients that help to combat damage such as almond oil, aloe butter, and coconut oil." Carol's Daughter Almond Milk Daily Damage Repair Set, $32.40, available at Carol's Daughter.
Good For: Ragged & Split Ends While you can't really repair split ends, an ultra rich mask will help get you to your next trim by calming and softening your most ragged parts. "I like to apply this creamy mask on the mid shafts through ends," Maldonado advises, but warns that "a little goes a long way." Christophe Robin Regenerating Mask with Rare Prickly Pear Seed Oil, $71, available at Sephora.
Good For: Any Hair Type "Kérastase Elixir Ultime Fondant is a deeply hydrating conditioner with a blend of four oils to help detangle and soften the hair," Yeun says. "Leave it on for two to three minutes and rinse for best results." Kérastase Elixir Ultime Fondant, $24, available at Kérastase.
Good For: Natural Curls This thick, heavenly-smelling formula is meant to saturate your strands. See, the instructions tell you to cover your hands with it, as opposed to a gumball or quarter-sized amount, then apply. (And we suggest you play by the rules on this one.) Vernon François Whipped Deep Conditioner, $39, available at Vernon François.
Good For: Dry Hair If you have an extra 45 minutes during the week to deep condition, coat this all over your hair and place a plastic cap over your curls to really let it soak in. The product is aptly named: this stuff is intense. DevaCurl Heaven In Hair Intense Moisture Treatment, $14 (reg. $28), available at Ulta Beauty.
Basic shampoo rarely exists anymore, but this no-fuss formula from Rahua uses coconut and shea butter to soften and smooth, while quinoa helps to strengthen, so your ends don't look like you haven't gotten a cut in over a year. Even better, the scent will leave you feeling like an earth goddess. Rahua Shampoo, $34, available at Rahua.
