The Meaning Behind Each Of The Kardashian-Jenner Family's Baby Names

In 2018, the youngest generation of the Kardashian-Jenner clan will grow by three. This means there will be even more names to keep up with. Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West just welcomed a girl named Chicago. And on February 4, Kylie Jenner confirmed what had long been suspected: Not only had she been pregnant with Travis Scott's baby — she'd also given birth on February 1 to a little girl named Stormi. Up next is Khloé Kardashian, who is expecting her first child with Tristan Thompson in March or April.

Kris Jenner established her own naming tradition: Give each of her daughters a name that began with the letter "K." But Jenner's daughters and son haven't continued that particular trend. Instead, Jenner's grandchildren (eight so far) all have unique and uncommon names, imbued with meaning and significance.

Who knows how many young Norths, Penelopes, and Dreams will be in kindergarten classrooms, thanks to the Kardashian-Jenners? Here's the reasoning behind each of their names.

Mason Dash Disick
Birthday: December 14, 2009
Parents: Kourtney Kardashian & Scott Disick

Kourtney Kardashian was the first of her sisters to have a baby. By naming her son Mason, Kardashian abandoned the family tradition of giving everyone names that started with "K."

Kardashian encountered the name "Mason" while pregnant, and told Life & Style in 2010 (via MTV News) that it was the only name she connected wth. "It was the only one that stuck with me. Right before he was born, I told my aunt we were thinking about going with that for a name. She told me that Mason means the same thing in English that Kardashian means in Armenian — stone worker. Another aunt told me my great uncle used to use the name Mason when he made dinner reservations, because Kardashian was too long. When I heard that, I thought, Oh my god, it's meant to be."

Mason means "one who works with stone."

Dash, Mason's middle name, is an abbreviated version of the name Kardashian. Dash had been Robert Kardashian's nickname.
Penelope Scotland Disick
Birthday: July 8, 2012
Parents: Kourtney Kardashian & Scott Disick

According to an interview Kris Jenner gave with E! News, Disick and Kardashian chose Penelope simply because they liked it. Jenner's mother suggested the middle name Scotland, and that stuck, too. The name Penelope comes from Odysseus' faithful wife in The Odyssey, who stayed loyal while he was away for two decades.

North West
Birthday: June 15, 2013
Parents: Kim Kardashian West & Kanye West

The media is responsible for North West's name. After Kardashian West's pregnancy was announced, rumors for names flooded the tabloids. North was one of the possibilities that the tabloids had identified.

"It was a rumor in the press and we'd never really considered it seriously, at all, but Kanye and I were having lunch right over there at that table about a year ago and Pharrell came over to us and said 'Oh, my God, are you guys really going to call your daughter North? That is the best name,'" Kardashian West recalled to British GQ. She responded, "'No we're not, that's just a rumor.'"

Not long after, Anna Wintour approached Kardashian West and West and said she thought North was a genius name. "Kanye and I looked at one another and just laughed. I guess at that point it sort of stuck," Kardashian West said.

Kris Jenner explained the meaning behind North on The View. "The way [Kim] explained it to me was that North means highest power and she says that North is their highest point together."
Reign Aston Disick
Birthday: December 14, 2014
Parents: Kourtney Kardashian & Scott Disick

Kardashian had actually considered the name Reign for her first two children. "I had the name [Reign] on our list with Mason. Then with Penelope, I had it on the list but spelled R-A-I-N. Once I was found out I was having a boy, we just changed the spelling again," Kardashian told People. "Reign" means to hold a royal office.

Aston may be a nod to Aston Martins, the luxury car company, since Disick has a documented love of fancy cars.
Saint West
Birthday: December 5, 2015
Parents: Kim Kardashian West & Kanye West

Kim had a very difficult, highly publicized second pregnancy. While pregnant, she had preeclampsia, a dangerous pregnancy condition.

West and Kardashian West never publicly explained the meaning behind their son's name. But the religious connotation of the word "saint" probably aligns with the idea of a child being a blessing.

Dream Renee Kardashian
Birthday: November 10, 2016
Parents: Rob Kardashian & Blac Chyna

Chyna and Kardashian never formally explained their reasoning behind their daughter's name. Though maybe Dream was always their dream? Dream and her mother share a middle name (Chyna's given name is Angela Renee White).

Chicago West
Birthday: January 19, 2018
Parents: Kim Kardashian West & Kanye West

With the birth of his third child, West had a chance to give his hometown a shout-out. Chicago is named for the city where West is from. Her nickname is "Chi," and she has no middle name.

We got a first glimpse of Chi in Kylie Jenner's birth announcement.
Stormi Webster
Born: February 1, 2018
Parents: Kylie Jenner & Travis Scott

Jenner revealed in an Instagram post that her daughter's name is Stormi, which derives from the word "storm." We'll update once we know the reasoning behind the decision.
