5 New Year's Eve Outfit Ideas — No Sequins Involved

What is it about sequins on New Year’s Eve? Sure, the evening calls for throwing confetti, but do we also have to be confetti? We’re going to say no. Sequin fatigue is real. And this year, we’re putting our foot down.

Don’t get us wrong, we’re all for a well-executed sequin moment, whether its on your eyelids or on a random Tuesday afternoon (what, you haven't worn a shiny turtleneck with jeans to work?). But when it comes to New Year’s Eve, maybe the best way to stand out is to actually go for something more…subtle.

This year, we're resisting the seduction of the sequin by embracing outfits that still feel special enough to ring in the New Year, but don't involve any extra-sparkly sparkles. Remember: There are plenty of ways to feel festive and party-ready without having to look like a human disco ball. Here's five of them.

Like to keep a piece of your casual side when dressing up? One of our favorite tricks for evening is layering a long-sleeve, midi-length dress over your go-to pair jeans. It’s cool and comfortable, but with the right accessories (think: a ribbon choker and some embellished mules), it feels like you’re doing a little something extra.

Topshop Satin Kimono Robe Wrap Dress, $68, available at Topshop; Re/Done Stovepipe- Seventies As F*ck, $250, available at Re/Done; The Row The Ascot Small Satin Hobo Bag, $990, available at Neiman Marcus; Attico Monica Crystal-embellished Suede Mules, $885, available at MatchesFashion.com; Mateo Lady Mother of Pearl Black Velvet Choker, $625, available at Mateo New York.
Ruffles can feel overly girly, but on a super-mini silhouette, they look festive in a way that’s modern and fresh. Style the look with a scrunchie on your wrist, an extra-tiny bag (you don't need more than the essentials on New Year's Eve), and comfortable flats you can dance in all night long.

Lisa Says Gah Maria Wrap Top, $140, available at Lisa Says Gah; & Other Stories Ruffle Mini Skirt, $85, available at & Other Stories; Jacquemus Le Petit Rond Small Bag, $555, available at Farfetch; L.Erickson Leather Scrunchie, $24, available at France Luxe; Manolo Blahnik Hangimisuflat, $895, available at Manolo Blahnik.
Most of us probably wear black-on-black every weekend. Take it to the next-level for New Year’s Eve by mixing textures, like slick, patent leather pants and a tank with unexpected feather detailing. If you can't resist adding a little shine, go for metallic accessories.

Zara Strappy Top with Feather Trims, $29.90, available at Zara; Helmut Lang Crinkled Patent-leather Slim-leg Pants, $1,095, available at Net-A-Porter; Baggu Phone Sling, $84, available at Need Supply; Alessandra Rich Blue Crystal Drop Earrings, $335, available at Opening Ceremony; Sam Edelman Ludlow Slingback Heel, $110, available at Sam Edelman.
This amazing, iridescent mini dress is just shiny enough. Instead of pairing it with your highest heels and calling it a day, go the complete opposite route and dress it down with sneakers and an oversized bomber.

Area Cindy Ruched Mini Dress, $745, available at Shop Super Street; T by Alexander Wang Nylon Twill Jacket, $495, available at Alexander Wang; Jennifer Fisher Baby Kate Hoops, $275, available at Jennifer Fisher; Alyx Multi-pack Socks, $33, available at Farfetch; Nike Air Max 97 Ultra ‘17, $160, available at Nike.
If you’re not going to bring the drama with sparkles, bring it with your silhouette. This jewel-toned maxi dress makes a statement in more ways than one (that hue! those sleeves! the surprise cut-out in the back!). Try Western boots instead of heels for another twist on a classic evening look.

Tibi Blue Celestia Drape Sleeve Dress, $895, available at Lyst; Zara Mini Bucket Bag, $22.90, available at Zara; H&M Large Earrings, $14.99, available at H&M; Isabel Marant Dallin Leather Western Boot, $775, available at Neiman Marcus; Melinda Maria Isabel Pavé Ring, $42, available at Styled By Noir.
