These Celebs Are Changing The Definition Of "Award Show" Hair

Grab the popcorn friends, because award season is well underway. And while we love anticipating all the great style moments we're going to see on the red carpet, we also know that this time of year brings a whole lot of the same: soft chignons, old Hollywood waves, and enough glossy blowouts to last three lifetimes. Now, there's absolutely nothing wrong with those styles – but, at this point, they're a bit of a given.

That's why we were so excited to see our favorite stars strut down the 2017 Billboard Music Awards red carpet wearing a variety of gorgeous and innovative styles that celebrated their natural textures. If this is a preview of what the next few months has to offer, sign us up.

Check out the best looks, ahead.

Taraji P. Henson, who's growing out her tapered cut, turned up the volume with a big curly Afro wig by Tym Wallace.

"It’s an original from the Tym Wallace Hair Collection, coming soon," Wallace tells us. "It took about 45 minutes to do. We began with applying Dove Absolute Curls Detangler to [her] hair, then used a FHI 3/4 inch curling iron and wanded everything. Afterwards, we used a Olivia Garden brush to loosen the texture and finished the look with Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play Volumizing Hairspray to add volume and maintain the look."

And it's safe to say that Taraji loved it. Her response Wallace finished? "I love it, darling. I’m Mahogany," he says.

Believe it or not, but Ciara was hesitant to wear this look before hitting the red carpet. "She was a little worried about the volume, but once she saw the final texture, she loved the style and she actually requested more texture!" her longtime stylist César Ramirez tells us of the half-up pony, achieved with extensions that match Ciara's natural hair texture.

"I started off with a heat protectant, applying Mizani Thermasmooth Style & Style Again over the hair. I followed with Mizani Thermasmooth Shine Extend and blew out the hair with a wide-tooth paddle brush to stretch out her texture and show the length," he tells us. "This smoothed out the hair, but still left plenty of texture in [it]." He used two bungee elastics to secure the look.

Solange was also styled by Ramirez — and her halo of blonde curls has never looked better, tbh. "Solange is a textured girl and she’s natural, so we always want to be mindful of what is authentically her," he says. "We wanted something that was natural and modern, with a really defined curl pattern. She now also has bleached hair and it’s in a very healthy state; I was very conscious of preserving that health."

While her hair was wet, Ramirez worked Mizani Thermasmooth Style & Style Again throughout for heat protection. Then, he applied Mizani Foam Wrap section by section, wrapping the hair with the flexirods.

"Solange is very involved in her look," he adds. "She has a clear vision for her look and I love the fact that she such an active participant in all aspects of it, including hair, and I’m totally open to it. Once I finish styling, she’ll give it her own personal touch either by shaping her hair herself or just running her own fingers through."
