14 Celebrity Couples Who Broke Up & Then Got Back Together

After Selena Gomez and the Weekend broke off their ten month-long relationship this past October, we waited to see what she’d do next. Because that’s the thing about being a celebrity as famous as Selena Gomez: Everyone's always watching to see what you’ll do next. People were surprised when Gomez was seen getting coffee with her ex, Justin Bieber. Their on-again, off-again relationship spanned years, and ended badly.

Relationships are hard to begin with, but we can’t imagine just how complicated celebrities’ dating lives are. The busy schedules. The boundless access that fame and money must bring. And, of course, the public scrutiny. The media covered each step of these celebrities’ on-again and off-again phases. Coverage for some of them, like Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, could probably fill a small novel.

But let's be honest: We can't look away from following celebrities' dating lives. Speaking of which, let's hope we can add Jenny Slate and Chris Evans to round-up soon. Fingers crossed for a reconciliation.

Chloë Grace Moretz & Brooklyn Beckham

Eighteen-year-old Beckham and 20-year-old Moretz are at that age when on-again, off-again relationships are a fact of life. Beckham and Moretz, who had been reportedly linked since 2014, became Instagram official in April 2016. They split in September 2016. But as of a September 2017 Instagram post, they are back together.

“I think we chose each other. It’s been years now off and on and it’s just one of those things, you come back and it’s like no time spent away from each other at all,” Moretz said soon afer their reunion, in November 2017.

Kristen Bell & Dax Shepard

Now, Bell and Shepard are parents to two little girls and are essentially the picture of a functional Hollywood relationship. But as Bell revealed to PopSugar, the pair split up briefly, early in their relationship.

"We were dating for about three months. He sat me down and said, 'I can't have this right now. I think you're wonderful, but I am still dating other people.' And then I, like, liquefied and fell to the ground, but I felt incredibly respected that he had the balls to tell me we weren't in the same place."

Soon after breaking up with her, Shepard came crawling back and reportedly told her, "'I don't know what I was thinking. I was dating someone else but they're just not as interesting as you, and I don't know what I'm doing.'"

Megan Fox & Brian Austin Green

Fox and Green made two big announcements in August 2015. First, that Fox had filed for divorce. Second, that they were expecting a third child together. Come 2016, it seemed that the couple had chosen to stay together.

Green commented on his marriage to Fox on an August 2017 episode of his podcast ...With Brian Austin Green. “We have three amazing kids. We’ve had and have a great relationship and you know, we’re just taking it day by day.”

Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth

Who can keep up with these two? Cyrus and Hemsworth met in 2009 on the set of The Last Song, when Cyrus was 17, and began a whirlwind of break-ups and reunions. Their first break-up was in August 2010; another came in November 2010 after a brief reconciliation. They got back together in April 2011, and confirmed their first engagement in June 2012. They broke up in September 2013.

They reconciled in January 2016, and went back to wearing engagement rings. Cyrus confirmed the engagement in an October 2016 appearance on Ellen. In May 2017, Cyrus released the song "Malibu" about Hemsworth.

Cyrus addressed the formerly tumultuous nature of their relationship in an interview with Howard Stern in October 2017.

“I had to [end it]. I don’t like when relationships are two halves trying to make a whole... So, I don’t think that I have that co-dependency. I think people that break up and get back together, that’s awesome. You get time to be yourself. You get time to grow up. I think if you're growing up attached to another person, you never really get solid as your own being."

Ansel Elgort & Violetta Komyshan

If you follow Elgort on Instagram, you already know he's radically obsessed with his girlfriend, ballerina Violetta Komyshan. To give you an idea, these are some of his past comments on her posts: "So hot so so hot soooooooooo hawwwttttt" and "I want to lick you everywhere." Moving on!

Elgort and Komyshan began dating in 2012, while they were both students at New York's LaGuardia High School. The couple broke up in August 2014, after struggling to adjust to Elgort's newly hectic acting schedule.

"I was doing okay," told Details of that period. "But I knew something was missing, and I was like, 'Oh, that's love.'"

They got back together five months later, and have stayed together since.

Pink & Carey Hart

Pink met her motocross pro husband, Carey Hart, at the Summer X Games in 2001. They broke up two years later, in 2003, and then got back together in 2005. Pink proposed to him, and they married in 2006.

The break-ups continued even into their marriage. In 2008, she and Hart broke up. She wrote on her website, "The most important thing for you all to know is that Carey and I love each other so so much. This breakup is not about cheating, anger, or fighting. I know it sounds like cliché bullshit, but we are best friends, and we will continue to be."

But the story's not over! They got back together in 2009, and now have two chilren.
Selena Gomez & Justin Bieber

After being rumored as a couple, Bieber and Gomez made their first public appearance in April 2011. As Gomez explained, "At the end of the day, I'm 18 and I'm going to fall in love." In September 2012, Gomez' rhetoric changed to, "I'm 20. I don't take anything in my personal life too seriously," as she stated in Teen Vogue.

They broke up in November 2012, setting off a prolonged phase of on-again, off-again. Another big break-up came two years later, in November 2014. Gomez dated the Weeknd for ten months in 2017, before that relationship ended this October. A few days after the split, Bieber and Gomez were seen getting coffee together in L.A. Given their dating history, there's a good chance a reconciliation is in the works.

Gabrielle Union & Dwyane Wade

Compared to the other couples on this list, Union and Wade's brief split in 2013 is nothing. After getting together in 2009, the pair "took a step back," as Wade said on The Tonight Show, in the spring of 2013. Wade fathered a child during that break.

Wade and Union got back together quickly, and were engaged in December 2013. They married in September 2014.

Jessica Biel & Justin Timberlake

Biel and Timberlake married in 2012, after a five-year road to the altar, complete with your usual break-ups and reconciliations. Their first break-up came in March 2011, though Timberlake spoke of Biel with kind words in the press. He told Vanity Fair that Biel is, "is the single-handedly most significant person in my life…In my 30 years, she is the most special person."

They were spotted back together in August 2011, and got engaged in December 2011. Their wedding took place in October 2012 in an Italian villa, because of course.

Imagine calling home from college and telling your parents that you're dating the Prince of England. Casual. Four years into their relationship, during Easter 2007, Will and Kate broke up. Will was pictured going out; Kate devoted her time to to training for a dragon boat race across the English Channel.

The break didn't last. By June, they were back together, and by November 2010, they were engaged.

Later, William said of that phase of their relationship, "We were both very young...we were both finding ourselves and being different characters. It was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up so it was just a bit of space and it worked out for the better."

Levine started dating the Victoria's Secret model back in June 2012, when he was constantly jumping from model to model. In fact, he'd just broken up with Prinsloo's close friend and fellow Victoria's Secret model, Anne Vyalitsyna. After a year of dating, Prinsloo and Levine broke up in May 2013. He quickly started dating Sports Illustrated model Nina Agdal.

After going on vacation to Mexico with Agdal, Levin quickly turned around and got engaged to Prinsloo in July 2013. He texted Agdal about his engagement. Prinsloo and Levine married in 2014, and are now expecting their second baby.

Early in their relationship, John Legend learned a life lesson: Don't try to break up with Chrissy Teigen, because she won't let you. In September 2017 interview with The Guardian, Legend revealed that he almost called it quits early in their relationship: “I was really stressed and busy. I was just like: ‘I’d just be happier single right now,’ and she was like: ‘No.’”

Aside from that one-day blip, the couple has spent 11 unbroken years together.

You'd need an advanced college degree in Kardashian Studies to keep up with Kourtney and Scott's relationship. They began dating in 2006, had their first televised break-up in 2009, and got back together in time for the birth of their first child in 2009. The rest of their relationship followed a similar pattern, before coming to an official close in 2015.

During the Keeping Up with the Kardashians 10 Year Anniversary special, Scott said of Kourtney, "She's the only woman I have ever loved."

Scott and Kourtney have three kids together, and are still working through their relationship.
Kylie Jenner & Tyga

After three years of an on-again, off-again relationship, Kylie and Tyga parted ways in April 2017.

"There was no crazy fight. We decided — well, I decided — that I'm really young. I don't want to look back in five years from now and feel like he took something from me, when he's really not that type of person," Kylie revealed on an episode of Life of Kylie.

Now, the 20-year-old is dating rapper Travis Scott, and is rumored to be pregnant.
