What We Know So Far About The Victims Of The Texas Church Shooting

At least 26 people were killed Sunday when a gunman opened fire at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, a rural community in Texas. The shooting is the deadliest in the state's history, and the fifth-deadliest in recent U.S. history.

Freeman Martin, a regional director of the Texas Department of Safety, told the Associated Press that 23 of the victims were found dead inside the church, two were discovered outside, and one person died of wounds after being taken to a hospital.

Sutherland Springs is a small town, so the shooter killed about 4% of the population, according to CNN.

"There are no words to describe the pure evil that we witnessed in Sutherland Springs today," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Sunday. "Our hearts are heavy at the anguish in this small town, but in time of tragedy, we see the very best of Texas. May God comfort those who've lost a loved one, and may God heal the hurt in our communities."

Among those who lost their lives were the 14-year-old daughter of the church's pastor and at least eight members of a local family. Ahead, what we know about the victims so far. We'll continue to update this story as more names are released.

At least eight members of the Holcombe family died in the shooting. Bryan Holcombe, 60, was the church's associate pastor. He; his wife Karla Holcombe, 58; their son Marc Daniel Holcombe, 26; and their infant granddaughter Noah Holcombe were killed.

Their granddaughter-in-law Crystal Holcombe, who was eight months pregnant, and three of her children — Emily, Megan, and Greg — also died in the shooting.

"I’m dumbfounded," Bryan's son Scott Holcombe told The New York Times. "This is unimaginable. My father was a good man, and he loved to preach. He had a good heart."

Haley Krueger, 16, died in the church shooting. Her mother Charlene Marie Uhl said the teen wished to become a nurse in a neonatal intensive-care unit.

"She was a vibrant 16-year-old that loved life," Uhl told CNN.

Richard Rodriguez, 64, and his wife Theresa Rodriguez, 66, were among the victims of the shooting.

"I'm going to miss him every day, every minute, every second. My heart is breaking. You were the last person I had, and now he's gone," Robert's daughter Regina Rodriguez told CNN.
Spouses Robert and Shani Corrigan lost their lives in the church massacre. It's the second tragedy that has struck the family, since the couple's 25-year-old son Forrest Corrigan died by suicide almost a year ago.

"Things like this aren't supposed to happen to us," Mike Coon, 50, a high school friend of the couple, said. "They were trying to deal with the loss of a child, which occurred months ago. Now this? I can't imagine how their other two children are having to deal [with this]."
