What Happened To Laurel's Baby On How To Get Away With Murder?

This post contains spoilers about How to Get Away with Murder's fourth season.

If what we've seen so far on How to Get Away with Murder are any indication, this season's biggest mystery isn't a whodunit. In fact, it's not about murder at all. Instead, we're left wondering what happened with Laurel's (Karla Souza) pregnancy.

Laurel might be the smartest member of the Keating Four; at the very least, she's the most manipulative. In the season 4 premiere, we see her tell her father, Jorge (Esai Morales) that she had an abortion — but later in the episode, she tells the other Keating Four members that she wants to have the baby. As the season has progressed, we've seen Laurel attend doctor's appointments; it's clear she didn't have an abortion.

The flash forward at the end of the premiere, though, throws everything into confusion. We see Laurel in a medical gown in what appears to be a hospital. And for some reason, Frank (Charlie Weber) and Annalise's therapist, Isaac (Jimmy Smits) are there, too. Laurel starts screaming, asking Frank where the baby is; her stomach appears flat. Later on, we also see Michaela (Aja Naomi King) at the hospital, asking if "he" is dead. Could the "he" be a reference to Laurel's unborn child?

Since the first episode, we've learned that Isaac calls Annalise (Viola Davis) to let her know Laurel's awake. And for some reason, he knows who Michaela is. But that doesn't tell us what happened to the baby.

In next week's winter finale, we'll finally know what happened that night. Until then, here are the best theories about what could have happened with Laurel's pregnancy.

This post was originally published on September 29, 2017. We'll update it with more theories until we know what really happened with Laurel's baby.

Does Laurel go into labor at the Antares party?

In last night's episode, Tegan asks Michaela to plan a party at Caplan & Gold to celebrate Antares going public. We know something happens at the law firm's office in the flash forward — could Laurel go into an early labor at the party? That doesn't explain where the baby is, exactly, but it could help tie some of the night's events together.
Was Laurel's baby born premature?

As Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya points out at The A.V. Club, this could be a likely answer. When Laurel tells the Keating Four she wants to keep the baby, she says she's four months along. That means that in the flash forward, she'd be seven months pregnant. That's far enough along that Laurel could have (possibly involuntarily) had the baby prematurely, and the child could be doing just fine.

That's a much more positive take than imagining that in addition to losing Wes (Alfred Enoch), Laurel has also lost her unborn child. But if the baby was born prematurely and is alive, why isn't she allowed to see her child?
Did Annalise take the baby?

Upadhyaya, as well as plenty of Twitter users, proposes that Annalise could have taken the baby, which is pretty dark, but, then again, she has already lost her biological child as well as the boy she considered a son. But if Annalise has the baby, why would Isaac call her?
Did Laurel's father take the baby?

Jorge was way too unfazed when Laurel told him she had an abortion. If he knew she was lying, he could have staged another kidnapping.
Is Laurel's baby dead?

Yes, this theory is dark, but the third episode of this season hinted at that possibility. Michaela asks Isaac if "he's dead" while looking at the hospital's nursery — and Laurel also said her baby is male.
Is the baby Frank's?

Okay, so this doesn't really tell us where the baby went — but the fact that Laurel is having her doctor conduct a paternity test has us curious if his intuition could be right.
