What are you going to be for Halloween? It's the universal question that starts long before the sun sets on Labor Day weekend — and it can be just as annoying as it is exciting. The possibility! The pictures! The pressure!
Luckily, there are many opportunities for
makeup lovers to get crafty — some glittery, icy blue eye shadow can create a '90s pop star while a classic black cat can be born from a few simple swipes of charcoal liner. We can respect the simple costumes, but this year, there's one look that will continue to trend: Kylie Jenner.
Channeling an of-the-moment celeb makes your costume instinctively recognizable, but original enough that not everyone (and their five BFFs) will be wearing a variation of the same look. Our recommendation? Show your pop culture know how
and have a major lip moment as the youngest Jenner.
Not only can we pick your costume, we've taken all the legwork out of your planning. Brows, lashes, a killer wig that's under $20 — we found everything you need to look authentically Kylie. Plus, you're sure to be
selfie-ready all night. Seven steps to Halloween gold, ahead.
Step #1: Skin In her everyday, 18-step makeup routine, Kylie shows that her airbrushed complexion starts with a base of Make Up For Ever foundation, but first it's mixed with another formula... Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Foundation, $43, available at Sephora.
Jenner combines MUFE's foundation with this sheer Complexion Perfector — creating a blendable formula that covers and evens. (Forget Halloween, we might bring this combo into our everyday life...)
Urban Decay Naked Skin One & Done Hybrid Complexion Perfector, $36, available at Sephora.
Most glam makeup devotees will already have one (or five) of these babies laying around. Kylie is also a fan, and she uses the spongey tool to bounce her foundation into her skin. Saturate it with water, squeeze out the excess, then dab your way to Jenner status.
BeautyBlender the original beautyblender, $20, available at Sephora.
Kylie swipes this creamy concealer under her eyes for a radiant, rested look. Pro tip from the Snapchat queen herself: Blend it in with a damp Beautyblender for a seamless finish.
NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, $13, available at Sephora.
Step #2: Contour reports that Kylie contours her face, and more specifically, her nose, using this Marie Claire Charlotte Tilbury contour palette. Her application technique? Keep your contour strokes tight. "The closer together you make [the strokes], the thinner your nose will look," Kylie says. Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow Face Sculpt and Highlight, $68, available at Charlotte Tilbury.
The contour doesn't stop there — time to shade your socket to sultry, Kylie-approved perfection. How? Kylie dusts her lids with a light brown shadow, going a little bit darker at her crease. In her
makeup routine video, she shows that her best application practices include blending a dark brown shadow across her lashline before bringing it out to a slight wing. Kylie Cosmetics Kyshadow in The Bronze Palette, $42, available at Kylie Cosmetics.
For further depth, the youngest Jenner likes sweeping the hollows of her cheeks with this brown powder because it's matte and mimics a real shadow.
Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzing Powder, $29, available at Nordstrom.
Step #3: Instagram Brows Kylie rocks the Instagram brow trend: A slightly-faded look that goes from light to dark as you move towards the outside of the face. To achieve this, pick up her super pigmented, brow pencil pick. Tip: Fill in the arch and tail with a heavy hand, lightly define the bottom and top borders using short strokes, then lightly trace in the center. (Props if you can pull off the ombréd tonal shift.) Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Medium Brown, $21, available at Sephora.
Kylie's brows aren't finished with the pencil — and neither should yours. To really emphasize the arches, swipe some light-reflecting concealer above and below to pop your pencil work.
Becca Ultimate Coverage Concealer, $32, available at Sephora.
To ensure that the sculpted arches don't disappear by the end of the night — that will not be very Kylie of you — use an eye shadow brush dipped in translucent powder to set your work.
Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, $23, available at Sephora.
Step #4: Lashes Anyone who follows Kylie on Instagram knows that her lashes are next level dramatic — in a good way. Luckily for us, it's often a result of easy-to-apply strip lashes. Rob Scheppy, one of the Kardashian's go-to glam gurus, told us that he once used an entire box of lashes on Kylie. While we don't expect that dedication and skill for Halloween, you can go big by applying a strip of lashes then popping the outside of your lashes with a few partial strips. Kylie, is that you? Eyeko Lash Wardrobe, $22.00, available at Eyeko.
Step #5: Matte Lips Let's cut right to the chase here: You're either going to want to overline your lips in a slightly dramatic way or opt for some kind of plumping device. Juvalips has one that's FDA-approved (please do not resort to any kind of dangerous #KylieJennerChallege hacks). We’ve tried this new Juvalips vacuuming machine, and although it’ll cost you — some find it good for a temporary plump. JuvaLips Original Lip Plumper, $129, available at JuvaLips.
No surprise here: To complete your look you should be using her lip kit. The Candy K, soft, mauve shade is a Kylie classic. However, if you haven't gotten your hands on one of these,
Mario Dedivanovic, the Kardashians’ longtime makeup artist, told us you can imitate the lip-plumping effect on a budget using the Nyx Slim Lip Pencil in Mauve. Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kit in Candy K, $29, available at Kylie Cosmetics.
Step #6: Hair It's no secret that Kylie loves wigs and clip-in extensions. Without actually dip-dying your hair or spending a fortune on extensions, you can simply grab a long, Kylie-inspired, two-toned wig from Amazon. Pop it on and boom: You're practically living in Calabasas. SiYi Long Straight Mint Green Wig, $18.99, available at Amazon.
Not into wigs? Give your natural hair an infusion of color with hair chalk instead. It's cheap and washes away with shampoo, making it easy to de-Kylie the day after Halloween.
Splat Hair Chalk, $5.99, available at Ulta Beauty.
Want to bring your Halloween look well into November? We love your dedication. Grab a jar of Manic Panic —
Kylie mentioned on Instagram that this turquoise shade is your favorite — and bribe a friend with candy corn to help you a day before. Manic Panic High Voltage Classic Cream in Mermaid, $13.99, available at Manic Panic.
Step #7: Coffin Nails Long, squared-off acrylics are a foundational part of Kylie's look — but apply them last, or you'll risk a sudden inability to master the art of contour or lashes thanks to your new, ultra-long talons. Tip: Now would be a great time to post your first selfie of the night. Kiss Products Salon Acrylic French Nail Kit, $7.71, available at Amazon.
Step #8: Wipe It All Off Of course, you want to do this at the end of the night. But you can stay on-brand with all things Kylie — just use the gentle wipes that the star has coped to stockpiling. Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes, $6.99, available at Ulta Beauty.
